I’m very close to buying a Tikka T3X Compact Tactical chambered in .308, so now I need to decide on a scope. I can’t justify spending more than $500, and of course I’d prefer to spend less if possible. I will primarily use it at an outdoor range, and at least for now I imagine I'll be using a variety of targets in the 100-300 yard range. TIA.

Most of the scopes that I'd normally recommend are either no longer being made, or are out of stock everywhere. I won't argue that there are better scopes than Leupold. But at the same time Leupold is never a bad choice and by default at the moment is what I'd recommend. The VX-Freedom scopes start at around $200 for something with a basic duplex reticle. I have "nicer" scopes, but would not feel handicapped with that scope. I can't think of anything less expensive that I'd recommend.

If you look around the VX3i can often be found at $300-$350 for a basic duplex reticle. With either the VX3i or the VX-Freedom there are other reticle choices at somewhat higher prices.

At 300 yards or less you can do fine with a duplex reticle. But if you think you may want to shoot farther at some point in the future something with either multiple aiming points or dials will be an asset.

Right at the upper limit of your budget I like this. The elevation dial is adjustable, but unlike most target scopes it will lock down.

Buy Leupold 3.5-10x40 VX-3i Riflescopes at SWFA.com - SWFA Outdoors

I recently bought one of these:

I paid right at $500 for it. I really like it, optically it was better than everything else in its price range at BassPro (I had a bunch of gift cards). Adjustments are nice, and I like the reticle too. It might be a little "busy" though for some people. Nice and light weight too, which was a requirement of mine but might not be for you.

I also like Leupold. I have a Weaver Grandslam on my Tikka. A local gunshop and Nachez used to have sales on them but those days are gone.

The only two differences between that model and what I went with was a 30mm tube vs. 1" and adjustable parallax.

The adjustable parallax I'll admit isn't a necessity, but I wanted it. Currently it's on a hunting rifle that could very well live without it, but in the future it might end up on a paper puncher and the parallax adjustment future proofs it a little.

The 30mm tube however, made for a notably brighter optic. While the 1" Leupold I thought was a nice optic package, equal in brightness to a Vortex Viper HS (With a 30mm tube) but much less glare and better contrast it appeared plus significantly less weight for the same magnification. The 30mm tube Leupold was a whole step above both.

I am a fan of Sightrons , Leupold, Nikons which are no longer been made and Bushnell. In your price point check out the Bushnell nitros or any of the Sightrons that fit your budget.
