Just picked up a new M2.0 9mm optic ready compact. Out of the box, it looks like they added a new finish to the slide compared to my other 2.0's. And I just wonder if that may be the problem.....

I had a hard time racking the slide the first time. Very, very tight. Finally got it racked back, released slide and would not go into battery. Will not go into battery without a good, solid release of the slide. If releasing slowly, it will hang just before locking up and I have to take my thumb and push it the rest of the way forward. From what I can see, it looks like the top of the barrel is hanging up as it goes into the slide election port. Tried my new TacSol threaded barrel and it was even tighter than the factory barrel. Did not get a chance to try any of my other 2.0 barrels yet.

Anyone else have an issue similar to this?

Is this something that will wear in with some shooting or do I need to let it take a road trip to S&W?

If It Racks well with a fast sligshot Release I would just go ahead and shoot it. Being new and tight probably just needs some break in. I learned Long ago Not to Rack any Auto softly. Asking for a Jam. Just My Honest Opinion.

The two comments before my kind of nailed it. After stripping it and ensuring that it is ready to shoot some stiffness is expected. In new firearms don't expect to be able to drop the slide release without with much ease for a little bit.

Thanks for the replies all. At the price of today's ammo, it will be cheaper to send it back to S&W;). I think this is more of a "it'll wear in" issue. Already called and have a RMA in process. Will update when I find out more.

I would have at least disassembled it, looked to see if the factory left something from the manufacturing process inside they shouldn't have and then lubricated it to see if it corrected your problem. That's just my opinion and you know what opinions are worth. Here's hoping it gets fixed to your satisfaction and you enjoy it.

It would not work correctly with any of my other 2.0 compact or my SilencerCo threaded barrel.

Just got it back from S&W. Don't know what exactly was wrong, only thing the paper work said that they replaced the slide. Feels a lot better now.
These days, with no real hand fitting it’s not at all unusual for a new gun to need a trip back to the factory. A certain number of service requests per 1,000 guns is probably built into the price anyway.

I'm not sure that anything was really wrong with the slide or the barrel. A tight lockup is actually very desirable with the M&P, and it equates to accuracy. A loose or easy lockup equates to poor accuracy. If you watch the barrel fitting videos from Apex Tactical, you will see that the barrel's hood is fit to the point that it causes the slide to hang just out of battery, if you slowly release the slide instead of slingshoting it forward. This tightness is exactly what folks who buy the fitted Apex barrels are trying to achieve.

I think that S&W is just trying to give you what you want, but I'm afraid that your request may cause the pistol to be a bit less accurate.

Maybe so, maybe not. I have seen pistols with tight lock up and have one or two nice ones that have a tight lockup. This gun made my tight ones look like streetwalkers.

Field strip it, make sure it’s clean and oiled, shoot it.

Autos are designed for the slide to get a running start.

I'm of the 1911 school of thought (or Harley) - it needs to drip oil to work. Plastic or steel. Actually, I like Mobile 1 synthetic wheel bearing grease for a slide. Just don't let it build up and collect smutz.
