I own two West German Sig's (P220 and P226) they are both ex-LEO guns and their finish is virtually gone on the slides and have numerous scratches on the frames. I plan on sending them out for Moly Resin coating in flat black. I then was going to send them to SIG in NH for Action Enhancement Package. I just got off the phone with Sig customer service, who told me that "they would not do the AEP on my pistols since they have been modified". According to the CS rep I talked to, SIG considers refinishing a "modification". Has anyone run into this problem before?

My 1991-vintage P226 had a finish that was functionally useless after just a few months in the holster.

I sent it to Robar in Phoenix (now closed :() for Np3 electroless nickel on the slide, screws and levers along with the internals after an action job.

Now my work I could see SIG saying it was a modification because the internal parts were coated (and muuuuch smoother now), but just a slide/frame refinishing? Yeeeesh! o_O

As was said above; I’d have it refinished after SIG works on it.

Stay safe.

I completely get it.

Rather than go through all the possible version and applicators of a finish to determine which ones you will accept or worse; to onesie-twosie it as owners asked about it would be a colossal waste of time.

It's not in their or their share-holders' best interests to ignore it as they have liability issues on new pistols and used pistols run through their shop.

Simple enough to get their enhancement and then refinish if you wish, isn't it? Does Sig offer a re-finishing?

Todd.

Any finish applied to the frame which requires removal of the original anodizing will lead to substantially increased wear and would be a reason that they would deny any work on the part or parts that come into contact with it...that's why the factory will only refinish the slide

I can assert that this is correct. It has been true for a very long time. Re-anodizing a frame is not feasible.

Thanks for the comments. I will be sending my pistols to SIG for work first and then I will be getting them refinished.

Since the frame cannot be re-anodized, what about plating with hard chrome (e.g. Mahovsky's Metalife)?

How much frame rail wear is there? If bare alloy is showing, then I wouldn’t spend a dime on the gun. You can tell a lot about a Sig just by inspecting the rails.

Otto, the rails are in good shape. Whatever department owned it before me kept it well greased! The gun is the typical Ex-LEO gun, carried a lot, shot little.
