What do I need to load shotshells?

How did I miss this thread?

I am not really sure what I have at home. I saved a few boxes of Federal target and Win AA I shot 2 summers ago and my other buddy used to shoot competitivly and said he's got several grocery bags I could buy from him. He said mostly AA and gun club.

Junk the Federal hulls. Load the Gun Clubs and AA's. As George P and others have said, find load data from the powder manufacturers for the hulls you have, the wads and primers you want to use (Or can find in the case of primers.......keep in mind George P's advice on not loading European primers in Remington or Winchester hulls because of the differences in size.) the shot load you want, and don't deviate from them.

J-Ron Claybusters makes great wads at a reasonable price. Cheaper than OEM.

Yes, and there's a reason for that. They leave a lot of plastic in some barrels. I bought one bag, then a bottle of Slip 2000 Choke cleaner to get the plastic out of my barrel and choke tubes. Never again. I prefer Downrange wads, and will use Winchester if I can't get Downrange wads.

If you are going pheasant hunting, I would not use nothing less than 71/2 if hunting behind dogs and number 6 if it is a driven hunt as the ranges are usually longer. Save the 8's and smaller sizes for quail (bob white), doves and skeet.

I used Rem, Nitro Sporting Clays shells for game farm pheasants, dropped them like rocks. It's the hottest load I dare use in my 1100 Competition Synthetic.

This year, it will be 7/8 oz. 5's in a 16 ga SxS, or Fed. Hi Brass (really steel based, BTW) 5's in the Model 12.

Very interesting on the Model 12. I inherited one in 16 gauge from my dad that he bought in the 50's. I have been using Winchester AA wads for both 12's and 20's (I do not reload for the 16) since I started reloading in 1970. I used Remington power pistons early on, but changed over to the AA's soon after. I only reload AA hulls.
