Does anyone have a source for shorter barrels, 18 or 20 inch maybe?

My grandpa has a maverick 88 with a 28 inch barrel, I think it's a sporting model. He wanted the gun to do double duty for ranch defense etc.

He's got the tools and know how to chop it down, but the 28 inch is good for a lot of other uses, so it might be nice to keep that and get a secondary barrel, best of both worlds.

I think the mossy 500s will fit but I wasn't sure about supply issues in these.. "UNPRECEDENTED TIMES (tm)".. If anyone had a good source for an inexpensive compatible barrel I'd love a message or a lead. Thanks kindly!

FYI anything shorter than 18" barrel or OAL less than 26" on a standard shotgun is illegal.

The NFA defines shotgun, in part, as a weapon designed or redesigned, made or remade, and intended to be fired from the shoulder and designed or redesigned and made or remade to use the energy of the explosive in a fixed shotgun shell to fire through a smooth bore either a number of projectiles (ball shot) or a single projectile for each pull of the trigger.

A shotgun is a firearm subject to the NFA if the shotgun has a barrel or barrels of less than 18 inches in length. A weapon made from a shotgun is also a firearm subject to the NFA if the weapon as modified has an overall length of less than 26 inches or a barrel or barrels of less than 18 inches in length.

Yeah, I'm just looking at 18 or even 20 inch barrels for him. Never heard of optics planet, I will try to check them out. I looked on eBay first but I think they were going for way more then he spent on the gun, money is tight so I doubt he would want to spend too much on a shorter barrel.

Ah man, looks like everything on optics planet is on extended backorder!

Nobody has 18.5" 500/88 barrels in stock...I know, I'm looking for one and have been for a while.

You can try Ebay.. my Maverick 88 already had an 18.5" barrel on it but I was able to find a 24" slug barrel and a 28" threaded barrel. I did see some 18.5" barrels a while back on there but not cheap.. $250 and up. Aslo try Gunbroker, you dont need an FFL to purchase a barrel.

Stay away from optics planet for gun parts. They are notorious drop shippers.

I have a few small parts that were "in stock" that are still waiting to ship.... 9 months later. But they are cheap and hard to find so I wait.

Sorry to change the subject.

I've had for luck with eBay for parts. Calling Mossberg directly might give options too, they have decent CS and a decent parts store

X 2 here as well, stay away from optics planet. I got screwed by them every time i`ve bought things from them. They`re on my "NEVER TO COME OFF MY BLACKLIST" notes.

I agree with everyone else. Since it is so hard to find barrels right now. Try to find a cheap 28" plain barrel and then cut it down.

I will also repeat that you should cut it to 18.5" from the bolt face (closed) to the end of barrel. Anything under 18" will get you in trouble.

Here is an excellent video from MidwayUSA on how to properly measure barrel length.

For Mossberg barrels I use to find the best selection and prices at Midwest Gun Works. Of course they're all sold out like everyone else but when they get back in stock I would give them a try.
