on 12"x24" man-torsos? Say, 5m apart. With an optic sight on a flattop AR carbine, .30 seconds is quite feasible to attain, between hits on one target and the next. You'll never crack 1 full second with the bolt action, nor .60 second with the lever action. So why be 2-4x slower than you have to be, with your life on the line, hmm? You can easily miss a guy, too, you know. In combat, there's hundreds of missess for every hit, and many hits for each SOLID hit, too. so why kid yourself that manually operated rifles are ok for combat? They aint.

There is a HUGE difference between Combat and Self Defence situations.

In a combat situation you want to have those quick hits, but you are unlikely to encounter any such situation in the states unless you are a LEO or other Peace officer.
Besides if you are finding yourself in situations like this then you are violating Rule #2 of a fight, Do not be there.

You're assuming a lot of things. For example, that the rifle functions. I can't tell you how often I've seen semiauto rifles malf, sometimes very seriously, in training. Some need new parts...some need to be sent to the scrap heap. People think that a reliable rifle is no harder to assemble from parts than a Snap-Tite model, and that they don't need any skills or training to do the job of a professional.

By the way, just to throw more gas on the fire, there was a test in American Rifleman a few years back that found, based on timed performance of four or five operators, that bolts and levers were essentially the same in terms of operating speed. Surprised me then and still surprises me, but that's how at least that group of five people tested.

FWIW...

OBTW welcome to THR rusbil

YOu seem to have blown in here and have a tendency to be very emphatic in your ideas. Relax and sit a spell, It seems like that you have to teach The Highroad something about CQB and other things in and around self defence....27 posts in your first day wheeuuu!

Whoa!! WHOA!!! and wow.

Before I search past thread for posts from this guys' names, why'd he get banned so many times? A consistent pattern of posting strong opinion and then pooping on anyone who disagreed, or something far worse? I'd like to know the M.O. so I can recognize it.

BTW, sure it's not just a series of college jerks using the same computer down at the 'puter lab?

Grump, it is more of an epic saga than something that can just be explained. It has to be experienced to be believed. As for all of the names, multiple registrations are not allowed. Multiple registrations so you can argue with yourself, or compliment yourself are not allowed, reregistering two minutes after being banned because you are a troll is really not allowed, and tends to get the mods a little torqued off. :)

It's not just on THR--not by a long shot. And that's not a complete list of aliases--not by a long shot.

I dunno, I have always dug that guys posts... :D

Wonder if he went back to headshots with the .22LR or still digs the P239 in 357 SIG.

cheers

(btw Grump... I think he's an older gent... wrote a couple books on suppressors, spent some time in the pokey, etc. Been around a long time, shot with some of the greats, etc.)

I've seen him at work on several forums. It isn't a series of college kids at the same computer. The sentence structure and punctuation is consistent, although he isn't as bad as he used to be. He usually has a very stupid point of view, and won't consider any others. In the past, the only rifle useful for combat was a 'canned' shorty AR with a .22 LR upper. Any other weapon would get you killed, and you would be stupid to use it. His reloading recipes were even more interesting. For one .45 load, he said he would drill out most of the bullet to make it much lighter, and fill the case with a fast-burning powder. I don't remember the exact powder offhand, but he claimed to get velocities that my SKS would be proud of.

Overall, I think his posts are pretty amusing. Wait 'till you see him get into an argument with someone- it's hillarious. He breaks up the monotony quite well!

Edited to add: Check out this thread.

Don't forget the critical question: can the AR perforate the Assault Wheelbarrow that the cardboard is hiding behind?

I've seen that idiot get kicked off Battlerifles.com a couple of times. I haven't seen him around there in a while. I remember him saying stuff about the 5.56mm "owning the 600m line".:scrutiny: I heard he got kicked off the M14 Firing Line a few months back and I didn't even know he'd been there. I heard he was known for talking about sniping off farmers from under his assault wheelbarrow on a raft for food and advocating selling drugs to finance his arsenal too. Mark of a real loser.

I don't know if this was the same test... but it was snipers using boltaction Vrs Semi-autos and the bolt cme out on top...but thats over distance rather than short range stuff, that may need factored in if we're talking about the same test.

I found the link to the post I referred to earlier. Click here. He was casting bullets with non-lead solder, drilling out the bases until they weighed 90 grs., and putting them in front of 12 grains of Bullseye for a muzzle velocity of 2000 fps. Or so he said.

This guy even turned up on the leverguns forum. Same MO, telling everyone how stupid they were to even own a lever, let alone to presume to talk about them when HE was so much more experienced and knowledgeable............:barf:

Good Evening All, This is Keith in North Carolina with an unusual first post. I was reading about the above mentioned gentleman in this thread and found the following on another Board and was curious if anyone else found some similarities.

I am going to be spending a significant amount of time in Detroit. I realize the best way to avoid problems is to avoid problematic areas, but I am not content to pass on opportunity due to fear. I went to look at a piece of property yesterday, and just one wrong turn or two can put you in a scary setting. The worst was driving down a street next to a massive adondoned industrial complex. It was so remote and the words "911 is a joke" were sprayed on the wall. Those words really drove home the seriousness of being somewhere like that.

Obviously I will not be spending any time in areas quite like that but I will be in neighborhoods not far from the aforementioned location. I realize the easiest choice is to pursue other areas for investment, but the potential is too great to pass up. I want to be reasonable though. The house I looked at yesterday was a few blocks from a police precinct and near a school. So I think it may be a good starting point to get a foothold in a decrepit urban neighborhood and hope to gradually improve it. I will own the houses and so I will be traveling to the same place and seeing the same people regularly. Since I could not find the information anywhere, I was hoping some of you could help. Sadly race is an issue. I am a white man going into a black city. The old mayor even said the city is for black people and the white can stay in the suburbs. I could not care less about color, but others feel differently.
My goal is to not look like an easy victim but also to not look like a SWAT wannabe. I want my actions/clothing to say "I am capable of defending myself, but I am not threat and I am just here to take care of my business"

What to wear??? I often wear a suit so changing for the location is something I am fine with. But what is ideal? Yesterday I wore black boots, black cargo pants and a t-shirt. One of the people in the neighborhood said "hey popo". My intention was not to look like a LEO. I just expected to crawl around and I pants/boots were ideal for doing so. I am in my early 20's. I am 5'9'' and about 170lbs. I am not huge but I workout regularly. What is the best approach??? Very casual?? Jeans and shirt? Are black cargo pants/boots and tshirt considered a good idea? My clothing choice always impact the next couple of questions.

What to carry? Should I carry a Kahr PM9 and a Sig? I always have my Delica or Gunting, Fox Labs, and Surefire E2D.Is this too much ? Am I forgetting something?

Body Armor. Usually I would not wear it. But if I need to go to the city at 3am I would wear it. Does this seem logical?

How to carry myself. Should I keep my head down and keep to myself or walk normally and say hello to people? Should I be polite when speaking to people or reserved?

How prepared should I be? Is an AR15 and a Benelli M4 secured in the trunk overkill? The goal is to never even end up in a bad situation... but the 911 response time 45 minutes for a homicide and at night most people do not even think twice about hearing gunshots.

Gangs. I have been trying to learn about the gangs in Detroit. Is there any special way to deal with potential gangmembers? Again should I keep my head down or acknowledge them??

I realize this is so damn long, but I hope the responses can help not just me but anyone who has to go to questionable locations. Most people simply avoid bad areas but what if one day that is not an option? I thank anyone who contributes or is even able to read this whole post.

xxxxx

Edit: I spent two years kickboxing. I have also spent a year learning Ju Jitsu so I am not foreign to self defense. I am also considering taking Krav Maga. Is this a wise choice? If not what is?

If this is out of line for a first post I apologize, but the thing seems tailor made for this particular thread. I deleted the posters name on the rare chance that this might be a sincere request for help.

I knew that was Gunkid from reading the post! So he's arrogant. I dont believe everything he says but he makes some interesting points sometimes. Probably be funny while it lasts.

Maybe he's toned it down a bit? This should be interesting.:scrutiny: :D

Edited to add, I actually tried this drill. I didn't have a timer so guessed that I was bouncing around 1.5 or 2 secs for one shot on each from rodesion ready (best times-avg 3 or 4 secs). Sheet metal is great for this it lets you hear & see the hit. I cut up an old furnace cabinet into 12 X 24's and hung them at 50 from a wire.

Boy there are a lot of first time, or very young posters on this thread.

Truly interesting how many "sub 10" posters like this thread......

I did go over to sniperhide and read up a bit on this guy. Interesting. Interesting......

"I smell a troll, a whole passel of 'em!"

heading back to "lurker" status.....

Keith welcome aboard.

I think that post you reference is more along the line of the guy who started the original Mall Ninja craze.

Gunkid's posts usually start with a partial sentance in the title and then go on and on about minute details that only a few can keep up. Really funny stuff.

cheers
