Effective May 5, people over 21 will no longer need a permit to carry a concealed firearm in Utah, so long as they are not prohibited persons.

Out of state permits have long been honored here. But after May 5, they won't be necessary.

The state will still issue permits, for Utahns who wish to carry outside the state.

That is great!

Congrats.

Good for Utah!
And thanks for posting that denton. We're only 75 or 80 miles north of the Utah border, and we drive down there quite often for shopping.

Yet another great state, but no water fir my boat. :p
I beg to differ, we have a LOT of water for boats - Lake Powell, the Great Salt Lake (sailboats mostly), Utah Lake, and so many reservoirs within 2 hours of Salt Lake City that are OVERCROWDED with boaters that you can hardly get your line in the water! Seriously, we have lots of boating opportunities, but not many folks actually live on their boat.

I'm happy to see our legislature moving in the right direction. It's no sweat to get a CWP here, but even better if you don't have to. Still, it's well worth the price of admission to me considering the 34 (?) other states which honor the UT permit. Now, about that NFA.....

I can't find a copy of the new law; however, what are the restrictions on carry without a permit?

Currently, a permit holder may enter a state supported school while carrying concealed. I wonder if it would be legal without a permit?

What about the never enforced moronic school gun free zone? Although negated by a state issued permit, how could it affect a person without a permit? (Case in point, when living in Moab, the city walking path used to take a person within feet of a public school. Never heard of it being enforced, even with those carrying open. But might want to check.)

Also, wonder if there are any other restrictions such as carrying without a permit in a bar, police station, etc.

I post these questions for those who might visit Utah or currently live there. Makes no difference to me, even though I still visit Moab at least once a year

I'm sure, eventually, handgunlaw will be updated with needed information.

Oh, and congratulations to my friends in the neighboring state of Utah. I would still be a resident if it weren't for your taxes. 9UcPCy4.gif

My boy just left Utah for a job in Washington state. I don’t know their policies there but I suspect they aren’t as good. If I remember correctly Utah’s open carry was no round in the chamber or something like that. I hope they amended that ridiculousness.

Those are all good questions, and I don't know the answers. I expect to continue to keep my permit, just because of the legal problems it avoids.

Most people don't realize that if you take a sack of tin cans and your 22 out into the woods, and do a little plinking, you can be in serious legal difficulty if there happens to be a hunt autorized in that place at that time. A concealed carry permit stops that nonsense.

As you pointed out, if you swing by the school to pick up grandkids, and happen to have a firearm in possession, it's a felony, unless you have a concealed carry permit.

I think carrying in a bar is OK. Schools are OK. The in-state bus and train system is OK. The interstate buses and terminals are a big no-no, even with a permit.

That brings up a point. So, when it becomes legal to carry concealed in UT it would be logical their open carry law would be changed to do away with the requirement of two actions away from firing (semi-auto has loaded mag...first action racking the slide to load a round, second action pulling a trigger....) Since currently a person with a permit can carry open with the handgun ready to fire with just a pull of a trigger. But who knows, governments are not known to be always logical. fZ1OeZM.gif

THIS IS NOT GOSPEL, because I haven't read the actual bill (yet), but as I understand it, the "no permit required" concealed carry option will still have to abide by the current open carry rules. Got this from a firearms instructor who keeps a close eye on such things, so it's probably true. I'll dig up the actual bill language and try to post an update.

I flew to Utah year before last a couple times to look at real estate. Ultimately income tax kept me in TN but it was my 2nd choice.

I remember visiting years ago and having to join a club to get a glass of whiskey

"I remember visiting years ago and having to join a club to get a glass of whiskey[/QUOTE]" - That's changed, too. One of the VERY few good things that has come from the influx of Californians.:D
