Reloading Presses, Demand

Don’t panic people... $9 9mm and $6 5.56 will come back! If they can make a profit a year ago they still can!

Here a Tip! STOP BUYING COMPONENTS AND AMMO in February
While I agree that is not going to happen. Those of us butt deep in our reloading supplies obviously are not driving a buying frenzies however when we see what primers are going for it tells me some people are willing to pay the price. Just about when we think a primer could not possibly sell for more they do. Following Sandy Hook we saw 223 Remington selling for a grand per 1,000 round case, a buck a round. Never would have dreamed it yet watched it happen. I haven't a clue when things will peak but all we need to do is look at past experience.

I give it 3 weeks!

Reloading is sort of like cooking.. it takes a lot of time, you need to follow a recipe, buy groceries beforehand.

There are plenty of people who “don’t like cooking” which is code for lazy. But then the pandemic hits, restaurants close and people are stuck at home cooking. Sort of like the factory ammo/reloading world right now.

I don’t know about 3 weeks, but I see some early signs of supply flowing on things like powder and bullets. Primers will take a bit longer, and prices will settle out more slowly. But the few online retailers that don’t appear to be gouging on components (Midway, Natchez) will force prices back down once supplies start to stabilize. People will get sick of snapping up the rounds they don’t actually shoot (you can only stockpile so much 224 Valkyrie and 25-06 before you start questioning your investment strategies), and the panic will subside as sanity returns.

PS - don't want anyone to think I'm badmouthing 224 or 25-06. I only use those as an example because they were the last two rifle calibers available at my LGS. I shoot 25-06, and when I saw a guy grab the last 3 boxes I commented to him that there aren't a lot of people who appreciate that cartridge. He responded by telling me he didn't even know what it was, but he thought he should buy it because it was all that was left. <<sigh>>

There are also those with minimal items in the cupboard that stop by the grocery store on the way home from work every to buy food to cook that night for dinner. This is also like the ammo/reloading world. Many people would just stop by the store on the way to the range. Well, that's not working too well right now.

Hey Mark Mark, please post a pic with the date on it when you find 9mm for $9 per box and $6 5.56, I doubt you will find it ever again, but I hope you do. Not trying to start an argument, just think it is a long, long ways off. Hope I am wrong and you are right.

I seen $8 223, 3 days ago. no I didn’t touch it

I’m very lucky I got my presses when I did. March 2020 - $185 LCT kit and then $100 for a Rockchucker Supreme June 2020 with RCBS’s $50 rebate. They might be the only presses I ever need.
have you seen the Lymen 8 turret press???

or the best thing since drive thur beer store... Lee APP????

Sell me on the Lee APP.. I have a single stage that I use to resize my rifle (223 and 30-06). I seat 30-06 on the Rockchucker, measure powder off the press and prime off the press.

223 - I use LCT to prime, powder drop, seat/crimp bullet.

I have a Dillion super swage 600.

I just don’t think I really have a need for Lee APP.

this is why EVERYONE needs the Lee APP (Reloader Jesus made it himself)

Well we can just sit back, watch the passing parade and see how it goes. Hell, I hope you are right with three weeks for the sake of the new people being able to get supplies. I just see three weeks as a little optimistic in the current atmosphere but let's hope. I can't get parts for my crystal ball ever since the COVID thing began. :)

Absolutely ridiculous. This is another one of those "oh, you didnt learn from every single other shortage, shame on you!" posts.

The reality is, brand new shooters who want a press and some components dont really understand why they cant find it, and being new, there was no "foresight" to be had.

So, sometimes, we think we are “set” but we really aren’t.

I think I have enough components to keep my hunting rifles going for the rest of my lifetime; 2,500 large rifle standard, 2,500 large rifle magnum, variety of powder equaling 10+ pounds, several hundred bullets for each caliber, plenty of brass.

then you decide you want to load pistol, and small rifle.

since I started in April, powder isn’t a problem. I have .380, 9mm, 38 sp and .357. I got 4 lb jugs of Zip and TG, 2 lbs of bullseye, HS6, Accurate #7, 3N37, had some X700 from shotgun reloading, some Win 540 and a lb or 2 of SR 4756.

then I went on a bullet binge. Bought more bullets than I’ll ever use.

then it was brass, again, more than I’ll ever use.

now it’s primers.

wish I could say “more than I’ll ever use.”
I’m using SRP in my training loads.

they work fine, so far.

And I have 4,100 large pistol primers I don’t have a gun that uses em. Bought them during the primer scare of 2009.

trying to use em as trade bait but thinking it’ll be easier to just buy a 1911. At least I could build 4,100 rounds for it.

I remember reading a post (probably on this site) where someone said you can’t do anything without primers and if there was one thing to stock up on.. primers. This was around March 2020.. I had about 5k primers and I thought that was a stockpile! I’ve only been able to get about 1500 since. Live and learn.

Near me, 9mm is going for $36 per box of 50 with a 2 box limit. That is at any of the stores locally that have any. So that puts it at over .70 per round when you factor in tax.

If you buy primers for $350 per 1000, that would put the cost of reloading 9mm at approximately .50 per round. I guess all things considered it's still much cheaper than buying factory ammo. This probably explains why folks are actually buying primers at those ridiculous prices.

It's all fun and games until you seat one sideways or crush one... talk about making a grown man cry...

For $350 I can get a nice Bed & Breakfast and a weekend away with my wife.

I bought an old RCBS "O" press for $40 from an add on S&W.

The thing is smooth, with no play, the only issue is the primer press is a tad touchy
