Reloading Presses, Demand

From what I've asked, and been told, there's not necessarily a shortage of primers right now, it's merely that there's an incredibly high demand for ammunition and the manufactures have to use their stock of manufactured primers for that ammunition as a priority. Then, they'll ship out "left overs" to retailers, orders, etc.

Well if that`s the case, then where the hell is all that ammo they`re making, because there isnt any ammo anywhere either.

Call me crazy, but I think that 8,000,000 former non gun owners suddenly deciding to buy guns is more related to pandemic, riots and a realization that they may need to defend themselves than it is about taking up a relaxing new hobby.
Those are most likely the same people who earlier wanted the police defunded too.

not sure about the rest of you but my primer search went from tough to tougher . no end in sight the local places tell me when I stop by the ask them .

Have offered people crazy money for them and they never got back to me , so either a scammer or they got a better offer .

I know some people say dont pay the price but if you have nothing something would be better than nothing .

At Sportsman Warehouse.223 Tula $8... it’s coming down
Not at our Sportsman Warehouse. I was just at ours yesterday, there were 6 boxes (20rd per box) of 10mm in the whole store.
Anything that was 12ga ammo was 3 & 3-1/2 magnum turkey rounds. And there wern`t many of those sitting on the shelf either.

Twice a week i go into town to ALL the local gun shops, flat out emptied, every one of them. Consider yourself lucky at your SW store.

I didn’t buy anything, I just like browsing. They had a good selection of 12g buck and turkey, and slugs.

Sure wish i could say the same. It has dried up here entirely. Couple places are going to close their doors for good. They`ve got nothing to sell, and can`t get anything. What a shame.
What i wanna know is, where are these GB sellers getting all this stuff?!?!?! Not to mention the screwing they are putting to people in the process. Its just plain old GREED!

I hope anyone who bought HUGE tractor trailer loads of stuff just to pilfer on GB, end up losing their butts on it !!!!!!!!

From my perspective, it's primarily in the hands of resellers, or hoarders. With where I work, I have the opportunity of seeing that first hand. People are not satisfied with one, or a few boxes of ammo -- they'll have to send in the wife, and 7 additional friends for the remainder of the entire inventory on the shelves. This is on a regular, DAILY basis -- same people, relentlessly. Retailers know that, and are forced to hold back a little bit in the stock room to spread it throughout the day. The unfortunate side of the situation we find ourselves in is when you help people, there's 20 different ways you're being taken advantage of, and again, this is merely from experience with being in such a retail environment. It's perhaps not the "solo" issue as there's over 7 million new gun owners as of recently, but in a local context, it's a highly ranked issue that is battling it out with the others. There's just an incredibly high demand since it's a profitable proposition for the buyer to purchase at such retailers that are not marking up the prices tenfold.

I think alot of it is being bought and then sold on places like gunbroken, its all about GREED! And you are spot on 100% correct, we the little guy are taken advantage of, and by ALOT!!!

I seen $8 223, 3 days ago. no I didn’t touch it
I’ve seen it too, but not a shelf full and it was only there for 5 min. Shops that have more than a couple 100 rounds have it priced at a dollar. Big reloading shop I frequent said he is still getting shipments, but can only order his normal quantity and it leaves day 1. His powder was 45 and bullets about double price. No primers.
A lot of shops here have 223/5.56 put up and will only sell it if you buy a gun.

I feel the same way but if the seller starts his auction @ $.01, not his fault fools bid up to un-heard of prices. Some people spend hundreds like most people spend twenty's.

For now, it's a seller's market. More buyers than sellers, so demand stays high. Supply coming from factories is diluted into the wholesale distribution chain, where I suspect a lot of product in the way of ammo or reloading supplies.....perhaps half or more....that would eventually make it to retail shelves is being diverted into what amounts to a black market. From there, it either goes to hoarders who have an inside connection, or to the resellers, where it shows upon on GunBroker. The products there can only come from two sources......from someone tapped in to the distribution network....including black market....or from someone's private stash. Been that way for months.

The way this normally works is when the demand has reached the saturation point, the first clue is demand dries up. The limited supply is still there....and priced sky high.....but folks stop buying. So what amounts to a plateau on a price line trend. That triggers a second response, which is for those who thought they were going to get rich off a mountain of stuff start getting nervous. This is like musical chairs and when the music stops, you better have a buyer, least you get stuck with it, cause when the price turns south, supply comes out of the woodwork as everyone panics to dump it before the price crashes back down. We saw that only a few weeks back with GameStop. Price shot straight up, but then came crashing back down.

So when will this end? Been looking for some reloading dies.......none available from the usual suspects like Midway, etc, but they are out there on ebay. First it was a few, and now I see several. Watched one set of dies go unsold (no bids) at what looked like a starting price below what others were selling for. Did not see anything wrong with them, so not sure what happened, but it could be we are looking at a plateau.

The same will probably happen on GunBroker with primers and such. Suddenly, instead of 5 cases at $1 a pop, there will be 10 cases at 80 cents......and those go unsold.

Once prices start falling, demand dries up entirely. The term for that is "do not try to catch a falling butcher knife". Stand back, let it his the floor and pick it up then.

I'm in pretty good shape, not in a panic and am waiting and watching for the plateau.

That is the big contributing problem that keeps making this worse. Vista is still selling to their distributors at reasonable prices, most LGS can't get any stock from distributors because the distributors are putting it all up on GB. The only place to find all this "extra" ammo that Vista and Winchester etc are producing is up on GB. Clearly it's being made, it's just not being made available to most stores. Thus stores have to buy it on the secondary market at marked up prices and thus you see the .70 per round - $1 per round prices for 9mm.

These distributors, knowing they can sell at marked up prices and get priority over everyone else on these big orders, keep flooding Vista with more and more backorders. It's basically a death spiral.

just stop buying and shooting, wait it out. paying $300 for a range day is not affordable or sustainable even for people with money.

has anybody been fishing? it’s fun and cheap

Great Write up! even if prices goes down to .05 a primer, I’m not buying. I (and many many others I know) will probably not buy retail for a long time. I like going to stores and browse and watch. Self-induced Panic!

It's mass hysteria, people are buying ammo and components whether or not they need, or even plan to use them.

Some of it's due simply to new gun owners and folks that were unprepared for a shortage of this duration and intensity. In addition lots of shooters that were reasonably well prepared are buying as much as they can due to the uncertainty of future supply.

I don't expect it to get better anytime soon since the problem is feeding upon itself. I know people that formerly bought a box of 30-30 and a couple hundred .22's every year or two who are resolved to never run low again and are stocking up accordingly.

Add to this the many new gun owners and reloaders that don't have a good idea of what normal prices are, plus hundreds of billions in stimulus payouts, and you've got the "new normal" where ammunition and component availability is concerned.

The availability of presses, dies and other non consumable shooting/reloading equipment will probably level out a lot sooner than items which are destroyed when used, like powder and primers.

I ordered a RCBS press direct from them. No gouging from them. Free shipping too.
Partner Press | RCBS

No Rock Chuckers there, but the new Rebel Press is back in stock again.....no Uniflow 3's yet. Little hints that maybe things will loosen up. Meanwhile, I'm spending my days 3d printing reloading tools, and having the time of my life. Spring is coming, I'm sure...... patience is a requirement these days.

I been on a reloading frenzy. Too cold and the ranges are snowed in. More snow on the way. So might as well keep on loading.
About the same here in Cleveland, Ohio. My outdoor range is a frozen tundra, like you in PA we are in a cold snap, and I am doing pretty much what I do every winter. I load and clean brass. Occasional trip to the indoor range which gets boring. More snow expected which is depressing.

I started last spring working as an RO at an outdoor range and it has been so cold and snowy here that I haven't worked in almost 3 weeks. Though weather is finally calling for a break next weekend at about 33*..

Looks like you have been on this site for a number of years and probably been reloading a long time. I am not looking to get into an argument or cause one one but why would I want or need a "factory crimp die?"

My seating and crimping dies seem to get me great results...RCBS, Redding.....
Only LEE dies I own are Factory carbide crimp dies. Every caliber I load. If you haven't used it, go watch some You-tube vids and then order you some.
