Carry permits as a revenue stream?

SD doesn't require a permit, but if we want one for reciprocity it costs $10 every 5 years. I am pretty sure the sheriff gets it for doing the paper chase, but the secretary of state's office sends out the card.

One of the reasons so many states are going to permitless carry is because in those states it isn't a money maker. It actually cost them more to process permits than the revenue it brings in. Utah just went to permitless carry a few days ago. In this state the permits are issued by the county sheriff and they don't have the staff where I live to do it. Years ago they had 4 hours on the 3rd Thursday of every month to apply and the staff was volunteer. That was local but that ended. Now it's a 75 mile trip to the court house to apply. I can get a building permit or license my dog locally but I can't get a carry permit here at the aux county facility.

The states wouldn't be dropping the permit process if it generated revenue. I have my doubts about the claim that it generates any revenue once the staff is paid and their state pensions are considered.

Have to wonder if there are studies done in states that went permitless carry to find out how much revenue was actually lost; considering people still need a permit in the majority of other states to carry a weapon. For example here in ID, those who head to a surrounding state like MT and WY, UT (now, not after May**) need a permit to carry in those states.

Or if you want to carry on Idaho's university and college campuses. The only reason my wife and I renewed our Idaho concealed carry licenses last time was because we still end up on campus at ISU once in a while. And even at that, we had to get the Idaho "Enhanced" CCW Licenses (which require a class) in order to legally carry on campus.

My Florida CCW is issued by and overseen by the Department Of Agricultural. One assumes the same clerk who processes it or the same director who signs it has many different duties. It’s easy to obtain and not expensive to renew.

Once many of the anti-gun states look at the revenue stream, of millions of registered voters, in their neighboring states, from CCWs, this may create the pressure on D.C, to give CCWs(CCLs, CHPs,etc) holders reciprocity, with all 50 states, much like Drivers License Reciprocity. Most bureaucrats like money, especially measured in millions of dollars of revenue, and gun hating opinions get swept aside, like the smallest hog at the trough.

This old guy is probably more likely to find himself back in SE Asia before going onto a college campus.

The FCC also did that not only with the vanity call signs, but also with regular renewal that used to cost and is now free. The FAA now requires that you re-register your plane every 3 years. The fee is $5.00. They want to make sure that the aging fleet of general aviation aircraft gets accounted for correctly as there were planes on the registry that were still showing as active, but have been scrapped for decades. Now Vin Number system for them.

I pay $5.00 every time I get a NY Voucher for adding another handgun to one of my permits. I think it probably does not cover the administrative costs. There is a three part form and a person at the Sheriff's department fills it out along with a new affidavit that has to be signed saying you haven't become a criminal since the last purchase and then when you come back they get the form and reprint your carry permit. For me that is 5 new plastic cards since they do not just update your last one with an open space on it. Can't believe they even cover their costs.

The renewal cost of the permits are low, but the initial cost included fingerprinting fee and statewide and national searches, so again I am not sure they cover their costs.

My boat an car registration renewals are the bigger dollar amount ones that probably does bring revenue to the
