Dream gun for hunting

I bought it a couple weeks ago. I may pick up archery again next year and I’ll have to see what’s on the market by then, but for now, I’m a rifle only kind of guy. I’ve wanted a Ruger No. 1 International since I was a kid. My dad wanted one for years, but would never spend the money. When I found this one in 30-06 in unfired condition, I had to have it. I’m looking forward to putting it through it’s paces tomorrow while I’m off work. View attachment 946785
I loved the one I had in .243; 3/4" 3 shot groups all day long - perfect for speed goats and coyotes

Dream gun would be a David Mckay Brown 28 gauge O/U with double triggers and fixed chokes 1/4 & 3/4 - with 30" barrels weighing ~ 6#-2oz, an ideal upland gun for quail, chukar, partridge, huns, pheasants. With him retiring next year and not taking any orders, it will take a lotto ticket and someone willing to sell theirs.

Same for a George Hoenig rotary action - 28 gauge with a spare set of rifle barrels

DMB made 20 guns per year, GH made 5 per year..................both are awesome examples of superb engineering and exquisite manufacturing.

For the fellas wanting a double rifle in 7MM/08 and .404 Jeffrey if you ever do get the money put together do yourselves a favor and DO NOT build double rifles in those calibers.

A double requires a “flanged” case for ultimate reliability. Flanged is the British word for rimmed. In either example above the flanged version already exists. For the 7MM/08 you’ll want it’s ballistic rimmed twin the .275 Flanged and for the .404 you’ll want it’s identical ballistic twin that is designed for double guns. The .450/400 Nitro Express.

You’ll be much happier with those choices in a double rifle.

The trouble is I'm too old to be able to wait for a double rifle being built. Plus social security doesn't amount to enough to afford one. ;)

In the calibers listed above you can just go buy one. No need to wait on one being built, the double rifle on SSI is another thing entirely. :)

I've bought mine. 1979 I bought my Heym-Ruger falling block. A great rifle that has given me so much shooting pleasure over so many years.
I bought a Merkel 201E many years ago and shot a pheasant or three with it. My Merkel 211E combi I bought as a present to my self for passing the Swedish hunting exam about 16 years ago. I'm thinking up a plan to hunt back in England with the combi in 2021. The Merkel 160E double rifle in 8x57JRS with extra 20 bore barrels bought about 4 years ago just because i wanted it. Superb rifle to shoot at driven game Its a shame I don't have another 40 years left to get the full enjoyment out of it. I will be using it in Croatia in about a months time on the boar and for moose and boar here. Not forgetting my Anschutz .22 a great rifle for off hand shooting and using it on the running boar range

7.5 ruger blackhawk in 41 mag. Maybe a lever to go with it. Been hunting that pistol for year's. Settled on a 44 mag.
I have that exact combo. The lever is a henry. I put a pistol scope on the Blackhawk and couldn’t find a holster for it, so I had to learn to make my own. Other than that, I really love them. Reloading is a must for the .41, but I’d do that anyway. Keep the .44 or not, but definitely go for the .41 pairing.

I don't know, I usually pick something. I have a Henry 45-70 in all weather finish that I love to hunt with now too.

I've been wanting to build "the" whitetail rifle for a while. problem is I have a few others that get the job down now, so I just keep putting it off.

I've got a Rem M7 in .260 with a Leupold 2.5-8x32 VX3, HS Precision stock and Timney trigger. It's accurate enough at just sub MOA for 3 shots, but it fouls quickly and is a PITA to get clean. Other than that its about the perfect little rifle for stands, blinds and still hunting.

I'd like to build another M7 around .260AI, with a 22" lapped barrel, McMillon Hunters Edge stock, and a 3.5-10 Leupold with B&C reticle and CDS dial. I'd try to maintain a 7lb weight "all up". I've been on the hunt for a donor action for a while. Problem is, my current M7 does pretty well in this role as is, so there's no urgency.

Dream guns? Hell. What's wrong with a Winchester M290 .22. 70 year old Winchester M94 .30 WCF. Browning BLR .308. Browning A-Bolt .30-06. AND a Browning BSS in 12 Ga. I believe these will fill the bill for any hunting I plan to do.

I am thinking of many guns.

My current list is:

1) Browning BLR with pistol grip in 30-06 or 300 Win Mag
2) Browning BAR Mark II Safari with BOSS in 300 Win Mag
3) Any Scout rifle that makes weight with optic and sling
4) Christensen Arms Ridgeline Titanium

I have the gun a 1905 Mannlicher Schoenauer in 9x56 built in 1921. I just need the dream sight a Lyman model 37 for it.

My dream gun 45 years ago was a Ruger 77 in 25/06.
When my mother died in 1996 i got $1000 from her insurance and bought one and a leupold scope .

It got stollen by my live in's druggie daughter shortly after I bought it.

Last year I did a trade for a nice older Ruger 77 in 25/06. Bought a nice leupold scope. Worked up a nice load for it. Took it back to Upstate New York for deer hunting . Used it first day and then used my H&R Handi-Rifle for the rest of the season.
Next year if I am still able to hunt I will use it until I shoot a deer with it.

My sister just passed away yesterday morning so this sentimental stuff is something that has to get done.

My father died when I was eleven.

Our family didn't have money, my father bought my oldest brother a used J C Higgins (Sears & Roebuck) 12 gauge tube fed bolt action shotgun when he was about twelve years old.
He gave he that shotgun when I was about 14 or so. I traded it for something way back then.

I bought another one off of Gun Broker to replace it a couple of years ago just for sentimental reasons.
My oldest brother dided five years ago.
Next trip back to Upstate New York that shotgun need to take some game by me before I pass it on to one of my kids. .

Guns don't have to be something of high value to make them worth a lot to you.

My dream hunting rifle is my Blaser R8.
I love my bolt actions (all Miroku Browning) but they are IMHO primitive, cumbersome relics compared to the Blaser.

Below:
  • .375 H&H Safari barrel
  • Zeiss Victory HT 1.5-6x42
  • .300 WM Safari barrel
  • Zeiss Victory 4-16x50
  • Blaser R8 Kilombero

I owned a Blaser R-93 in .300 Wthby. The thing was accurate and smooth. But I sold it after R-93’s started to remove people’s faces with bolt failures. Supposedly the R-8 fixed the exploding bolt problem. I wouldn’t mind having another Blaser as they are seriously smooth and accurate rifles.
