Picked up a new to me model 66-1 6”. All original and in good condition. I have a question for you S&W gurus. The SS finish from the factory was it more of a brushed finish or a polished finish? Mine looks to be or has been polished but shows usage. No heavy scratches or anything. I just want to know if I should break out the mothers or a little oil and light steel wool.

I recently bought a new model 63. The finish of the stainless is not that impressive in any way. It’s not really polished and it’s not really brushed. It kind of resembles your description.

Unless you want a shiny polished gun I would probably just leave it.

Here’s my 63

The factory finish should be shiny, but not mirror brite, like this-

The hammers and triggers arent actually stainless on early stainless Smiths, they are flash-chromed, which is a matte finish.

My Model 66-1 4” and 66-2 6” are shiny, but not dazzling.

I guess I could sparkle them up by hand polishing with Mother’s Mag polish or Flitz, but I like them as they are.

Stay safe.

A light cleaning/buffing with Mothers will minimize those swirl lines without giving you a mirror finish. I did my 617 which looked like your revolver

My old 66 has a finish that looks like a bumper of an old chrome Ford.

So shiny... But not a mirror, but deep enough to know it's not fancy paint.

If you dont want the polished look, and don't have access to a bead blast machine, the "grey" 3M Scotch-Brite pads will give a finish that very closely matches the factory matte.

I have a 625 that had a pretty nasty screwdriver slip across its frame, and those pads cleaned it right up, and you cant tell that it was ever there. Blended with the factory matte perfectly.
