I wondered if anyone has any experience with engraved Sig pistols. I won a used P226 in a raffle (because I’ve always liked them), but it came with engraving on the slide (see photo below). I didn’t know if there was ever any factory engraving done or if it would have been strictly an aftermarket addition. I was just interested in a little background.

It makes the pistol a little “fancier” than I would normally like, but it’s still a P226!

Thanks for any insights!

It is interesting. It has an external extractor and no rail. I don't think that is a common combination.

I’ll admit to ignorance on the gun’s history. I’m not a Sig aficionado, just a fan! :)

I’ll do some more digging on history, manufacturing date, etc.

@NIGHTLORD40K - Thanks for the suggestion!

It must have been a “thing”, because someone on the SigForum pointed me to a new listing on Guns International with the exact same engraving. That one had a black anodized frame and wood grips, but the same slide.

From the serial number, it looks like my frame was made in 1999/2000.

Didn't the rail predate the external extractor?

Not sure, I'm no Sig guru but I'm pretty sure the 226 I used to shoot a while ago had no rail and an external extractor, didn't own it so I can't check but I'm pretty sure that's how it was setup.

Seen a bunch of those police trade ins (that I stupidly didn't pick up cheap before 2020) set up that way too, at least in the pictures.

Sigs are hard to keep up with. Long extractor. Short extractor. Internal extractor. Full serrations. Half serrations. Roll pin. Solid pin. Folded slide solid slide Skinny 229. Fat 229. E2 non e2. Srt. dak. Non srt.
German gun. German frame Exeter slide. All Exeter. Sigarms. Sig/sauer.......

Never met one except the mosquito I didn't like though

That’s interesting...the engraving is identical, but the frame isn’t black, it’s gray. (And the slide looks more like a glossy blueing). I wonder if someone swapped the slide from another pistol — or if the engraver for Sig did any other runs.

upon closer reading, this must definitely be a “Frankengun”. The frame serial number dates to 1999/2000 - and the engraved versions were released in 2013....

That was my guess as well. Just doesn't look like the ones I found. Plus the grip. Such a pretty gun would surely not come with the plastic grip.

I wonder if I can find someone who would be interested in a trade....I love the P226 but the fancy slide does nothing for me!

At the end of the day, it’s a functional Gun. I might ruin the finish but I don’t really care as long as it goes “Bang!” and hits the target!

I would find a trade as well. Or at least order another slide. Even if you pay full price for a slide you have a nice shootable gun and can swap the engraved one and a set of grips back on and likely get high dollar if you decide

Eh, I mean you certainly could.

Or you could just shoot it and be happy :D

I didn’t mean I would intentionally damage the slide...just through use.

I’m going to order a standard slide and see if anyone is interested in the engraved one. ;)

Do they number the slides on those?

If they do, do you care?

For my part, I should think it'd be pretty cool looking with some real-world carry & holster-rash.

Todd.

There’s a serial number inside the slide...I’ll probably see if Sig can trace it.
