My father-in-law and his father were into Black Powder Rifles and had several. He passed away a couple of months ago and my mother-in-law is wanting to sell his collection because we know nobody into black powder. Do you wise people know the best place/way to sell them in Texas?

There's Armslist, and being black powder, you can sell them here via the trading post and gunbroker without (usually) needing to send them to an FFL.

I believe the THR Trading Post asks that you be a member here for a short time before posting (read all the rules!!!: )
Buy, Sell and Trade: Black Powder Firearms and Acc | The High Road
Armslist now requires buyers to pay a monthly fee to contact you about buying your gun so that limits your contacts.
Gunbroker does not have a monthly fee but they take a small percentage of your sale price.
I am sure that there are local auction houses that will handle all of your guns (write the copy and take pictures, etc.) but they will charge you 18-20% of your bid price and charge the buyer another 18-20% on top of their bid so your bids will be smaller.
If they are part of the Proxibid network, you will get a wider audience.
There are several well respected national firearms auctions.
Cowans Auctions here in Cincinnati does out of state estates if they include a large number of guns.
Good Luck,
EK

Thank you for the info.

It can depend on what type of guns they are and their approximate value.
If they're flintlocks or percussion, long rifles or carbines, modern reproductions or antiques etc...
Are there any gun classified websites that cover Texas?
Are you willing to ship them?
Are there any reputable gun shops in your area that sell on consignment?
Nearly every state has an antique arms association with members who are dealers of antique guns, and many sell at gun shows.
One or more of them may be interested in buying some of the guns if you can contact the association and obtain the names of area antique gun dealers.
They often operate out of their house and travel to shows with the guns that they want to sell.
And they may also know people in the association who deal with certain types of guns.
There's also Gunbroker which is an online auction house that allows the public to sell their guns directly for a small fee.
Many gun shops that sell on consignment use Gunbroker to sell guns for people, and they handle the shipping and the fees, and will charge a commission.
Another outfit is Track of the Wolf which is one of the nation's largest muzzle loader parts suppliers located in Minnesota.
People send their guns to them which they will sell on consignment.
But they usually need to be in very nice condition inside and out or it could be a waste of time since they do accept returns.
So without any other information than what you've provided, it's difficult to mention any other ways to sell the guns.
It not very hard to do some of the Google searches to locate contacts, but we don't know any details about what you have or your locale.

Here's the website for the Texas Gun Collectors Association. --->>> https://tgca.org
They're having a show and auction on April 23-25, 2021 --->>> https://www.reddit.com/r/Antique_We...exas_gun_collectors_association_gun_show_and/
Houston Gun Collectors Association --->>> http://www.hgca.org
Pioneer Gun Collectors Association - Amarillo --->>> https://web.amarillo-chamber.org/Non-Profit-Organization/Pioneer-Gun-Collectors-Association-8006

There are probably more associations, and the more folks that you talk to in your region the better.
You need to have someone at least look at the guns to help determine their value and saleability.
Some folks who have gun collections will rent a table at a gun show and try to sell the guns themselves.
Depending on location of the show, they may end up needing to stay at a hotel because the shows can last 2-3 days, Fri., Sat, Sun.

Awesome! Thank you!

I think there's a site, Texas Gun Trader, now that I think of it. It's a gun- focused firearms classifieds,specifically for texas. It's free to use, just make an account and all.

https://texasguntrader.com/index.php

I should mention, in case you've never used classifieds like this:

If you live in an area not mentioned , you can/ should do two things.
1) Use the closest named location to you and
2) Be sure to write where you actually are in the description.

An example : if I lived in Anthony ,Tx and wanted to sell a rifle of mine, I'd say that it's Located in El Paso, and then in the description write that I'm located in Anthony.

Aww man, there aren't any clubs in El Paso.
There are CAS matches at Fort Bliss in El Paso.

"Have you tried Ft Bliss? They have a CAS group (Judge Roy Bean) that meets at the Rod and Gun Club at 9 a.m. the first Sunday of every month. The guy you need to hunt down is Albert Burnham, he's a history professor at El Paso Community College (915-831-2274, [email protected]). He's also on Facebook."

On Feb. 2020, it was posted on the thread to "Call the Fort Bliss Rod & Gun Club (915) 568-5026...."

Here's a thread listing it. --->>> https://www.texasguntalk.com/threads/cowboy-action-shooting.87489/
Here's an article about it. --->>> http://www.elpasoinc.com/lifestyle/...cle_13ff2d3c-f371-11e0-9662-0019bb30f31a.html

I also found this about the Texas State Rifle Association, --->>> https://tsra.com/cowboy-action/
Under "Useful Resources" there's a page for places to shoot.
I entered El Paso and 3 places showed in the results including Ft. Bliss on a map.

If you decide you don't want to sell one gun at a time, ask around local gunshops. We have a couple that will bid and buy a whole collection - the good, the bad and the ugly - for one price.

If he was into to shooting black powder, he likely has a ton of other equipment and components. All of this is in short supply and bringing a premium.

One place that missing is the EPCC range, but yep, all this is accurate. Still, much to rich for my blood, and I like to shoot steel casings. Think I'll settle for The Wall.
