I have been a gun owner and hunter since I was 10 years old. I am now 65. But, I am very uninformed about current gun accessories and tactical equipment. I have just purchased a Henry H009X and was wondering what I need to know about buying a suppressor and using it on my rifle...I Iive in Georgia. Permit required? Do you have to use special ammo? Etc.

I believe Silencerco has an extremely easy ordering process that you can do from your house.

When I ordered mine from a different place I had to go get a passport photo and some other stuff.

Generally, if you find a local dealer who sells suppressors, they can help you with a lot of those questions as well as the ordering process. The only caveat is they will generally want to sell the brands they normally sell. That isn't necessarily bad for your first suppressor. A lot depends on what you want to use it for. There are outfits like SilencerShop.com that do a lot of the paperwork and such for you. If someone is near you with one of their kiosks to take fingerprints, it might be worth it.

There is no permit. You have to get a tax stamp for each suppressor before you take possession. That means you buy the suppressor (which is held by the local dealer) then submit the forms, then wait 6 months or more for the BATFE to approve and send a copy of the forms back with the tax stamp affixed. You would then take possession of your federally registered suppressor.

For a 30/30, you just need a 30 caliber silencer/suppressor. Most 30 caliber cans are set up to handle 308 or 300 Winmag (they should state that in the product information). With a lever action, you probably won't worry about rapid fire. Also, direct thread is likely the easiest way to go unless you want some sort of muzzle device to mount the suppressor. There are a lot of models designed for bolt action rifles that are lightweight and not too big. You can use a suppressor designed for a larger caliber, but it will generally not be as quiet. For example, I have a Silencerco Hybrid 46 that I use on my Henry X Lever 44 Magnum. Probably better to just get a 30 caliber suppressor. They come in various lengths and weights. You can confirm whatever you buy matches the thread pitch of your rifle which should be the standard thread pattern for 30 caliber.

You don't need special ammo if the can is rated for your caliber. However, with supersonic ammo the crack of the bullet heading downrange is always around 130 DB or more. The only way to get around that is to use sub-sonic ammo (less than 1100 fps) which is either downloaded or uses a heavier bullet. I don't recall ever seeing factory sub sonic 30/30 ammo. An extra-heavy 30-30 load would be interesting to try out.

Ok, this is complicated. What you need is someone who has put a can on Henry H009X.
There are a lot of factors there, like how much suppression is wanted; what sort of size (long & skinny or short and big around); whether it needs to be quick on/off, and the like.

There's a question of whether your specific State allows use of suppressors, and under what situations. Some will not allow hunting use; some allow you to own one, just not affix it.

Let's presume that's off-the-shelf. You then get to go through the federal rigamarole for such things. Forms, fingerprints, photos, and an incredibly long wait time. There is an argument that it's faster to build one than to buy one, but, that's not always the less-expensive answer.

As a guess, that Henry will need to have its barrel threaded. So, the span of time between ordering and getting the tax stamp back can be put to use.

Ammo ought to be off the shelf in .30-30, unless you are going to handload to subsonic velocities. The suppressor (and the Henry) will not much care if you use factory or handloads.

You can use regular ammo, but the supersonic crack of a 30/30 is still rather loud. Like, i wish I was wearing a set of cheap foam earplugs, but I wouldn't go instantly deaf if I shot at a deer with it loud. A lot like a 22lr. Subsonic ammo is MUCH quieter. https://www.hornady.com/ammunition/rifle/30-30-win-175-gr-sub-x#!/
You can own in Georgia. My cousin in Atlanta owns 6. If you're in the NW corner of Georgia, liberty suppressors is up there. They're good guys. I bet they would let you try a can on your gun. Quiet riot is a dealer 20 miles south of Atlanta. They are good guys too.
Coastal gun, and dead air are also in Georgia.

Beyond that, there is a $200 tax stamp, some paperwork, some hoops, and a 5-12 month wait to buy a suppressor. Cost is roughly $500-800 for most cans.

Silencerco is a silencer manufacturer. You cannot order or purchase a silencer direct from them, but must use your local FFL/SOT.
I'm thinking you really meant Silencer Shop, a distributor and not related to Silencerco. You can buy Silencerco silencers at Silencer Shop.

Lots of good suggestions here. Before researching and buying my suppressor I bought and prepared two hosts. One a 300 blk AR. The other a Savage 10 20" threaded barrel .308. Point is make sure you gun is ready to accept a suppressor and know your thread count so you can attach a muzzle device or direct thread.

If you have to thread you barrel make sure you have a top notch gun Smith. Any problems there will compound. I really like my Griffin Reece 7 suppressor. A bit heavy but very we built and quiet. Have fun with the purchase!

Silencer Shop makes it VERY easy.

Once one determines what suppressor they want through research and whether one is buying a suppressor as an individual or a trust. The steps for Silencer Shop ordering is as such:

1. create account at Silencer Shop and download their app for iPhone or Android
2. Purchase suppressor AND tax stamp on Silencer Shop website.
2. Answer questions in the generated form on their website
3. If buying under a trust, upload trust documents to Silencer Shop, if individual go to step #4
4. On the Silencer Shop app, take passport photo, this will be added to your account.
5. Find a local SOT that has a Silencer Shop kiosk to electronically take fingerprints which get uploaded to Silencer Shop from the kiosk (Silencer Shop website and I believe their app has a search by zip code for one in your area). OR if you don’t want to upload fingerprints electronically through the kiosk you can go to a local sheriff/police department and get a set of fingerprint cards done and mail them to Silencer Shop.
6. Wait for BATFE, at which point your tax stamp gets approved the suppressor and tax stamp will be shipped to a local SOT of your choosing (could be the same SOT that had the kiosk) or any other SOT.
7. Go pick up and enjoy.

Once you have your fingerprints in the Silencer Shop database (if provided through the kiosk) for future purchases you only have to update your passport photos and answer the generated questions in the future.

<----Silencer Shop "Powered By" dealer. I added a few things.

You can also buy from any of Silencer Shop's Powered By Dealers. Those dealers may have different pricing than what the Silencer Shop website shows. They may also have inventory in their store thats not in stock at Silencer Shop.
2. Answer questions in the generated form on their website
3. If buying under a trust, upload trust documents to Silencer Shop, if individual go to step #4 You can also buy a traditional NFA firearm trust through SS, or better, the Single Shot Trust. IMO its a better idea, a separate trust for each NFA firearm, submitted with only one name. After the Form 4 is approved you can add as many members to that trust with no need for them to submit prints/photos/RP questionnaire.
If the silencer you bought is being sent to a dealer other than the one with a kiosk, the shop with a kiosk can charge up to $40 per person for scanning your prints. If the Powered By dealer you chose has a kiosk....no fee to scan prints.
6. Wait for BATFE, at which point your tax stamp gets approved the suppressor and tax stamp will be shipped to a local SOT of your choosing (could be the same SOT that had the kiosk) or any other SOT. Well, the silencer will be shipped to the Powered By dealer you chose when you purchased the silencer. He''l have that silencer within a couple of weeks after purchase. The tax stamp (the approved Form 4) will be mailed to your Powered By dealer. If you decide to change FFL/SOT after the F4 is submitted you get to start all over. Never start all over.
7. Go pick up and enjoy.

Once you have your fingerprints in the Silencer Shop database (if provided through the kiosk) for future purchases you only have to update your passport photos and answer the generated questions in the future. You only visit a kiosk once, so you wont have any "generated questions" on subsequent purchases. When the stamp arrives, the Powered By dealer will contact you and you'll fill out the same Form 4473 you do for any gun. No NICS is done by the dealer because ATF did that before they licked your stamp. Sign, date show your drivers license and away you go!
