So I got a bit of a confession - I've owned a Kel-Tec P11 for 2 years and I hate it. It jams regularly, despite no specific causality. Sometimes fails to fire perfectly usable ammo (I'll reload a dud into it again and it'll fire fine). And I hate the lack of a manual safety.

I need a new pistol. And I'm impossible to buy for it seems, because I can't find any I like. I don't like Glocks, for the same reason (no external safety) plus I tend to get slide bite. I have small hands and have to hold pistols high, and glocks are just too low on the barrel. Dislike 1911s too, can't deal with grip safeties. The only other pistol I own right now that I like is a CZ52 but despite successfully carrying it there's two issues:

1. It's big
2. Hard to find hollow points in 7.62x25mm

So I'm coming here for advice. To clarify my needs/wants:

1. Manual safety, with decocker if possible.
2. Barrel/slide sit high so I can't get slide bite
3. Compact enough for carry
4. Isn't a 1911 or Glock
5. No grip safety

I'm up for suggestions. I don't particularly have a preferred chambering, I'm rather partial to .357 SIG tbh, but all handgun ammo is scarce right now.

If I can't find one that I'm comfortable with, I'm almost considering giving up on "sidearms" so to speak. Just too much frustration.

Hmm, the CZ is probably closer to what I'm looking for. Thanks for the replies thus far.

HK USP compact
-fairly high bore axis
-safety / decocker
-No grip safety
-Compact
-Not a Glock or 1911
-available in 9mm, .40 or .45 and .357SIGs can be found.
-All that and hell for stout/reliable and durable as the day is long.

Bring your checkbook. :)

S&W M&P 2.0

American made, available with thumb safety; decent trigger for a striker fired pistol, comes with a set of grip panels to allow for small or large hands; accurate, available in the teeny-weeny europellet or, for those with wrist muscles, 40 S&W or 45 ACP.

OP,
I'm not sure what your budget is, but I sold off some safe queens a while ago to buy an EDC X9S. It's now my primary carry gun. It's pretty versatile, as it's small with the 10 round magazine and has 15 round magazines if you want the additional capacity. It's accurate and reliable, and is everything I was looking for in a carry gun. It's not inexpensive, and I know people debate carrying an expensive gun as you may lose it if you every need to use it, a subject of another thread here. It's 1911ish, but is not a true 1911. I'm not sure if it's removed enough from being a 1911 for you.

CZ 75 compact, HK USP compact/P30, M&P or 320 or APX (I think they can all be had with safeties), Beretta PX4 compact come to mind.

If you have a pile of cash the Wilson EDC X9/X9S hit your needs too, but they are a bit costly.

If you don't need a double stack the Shield, Sig 365 or Hellcat could work.

Gen 4 and 5 Glocks do have beavertail backstraps, also, I need them myself to avoid slide bite (XL hands and a real high grip).

If you're getting slide bite off of those then the CZ 75 and later series CZs are probably what you will be happiest with.

The Sig P365 (the version with a manual safety) may suit your needs, though...

My advice to you is to work on your grip. If you have to specially pick your guns to avoid slide bite, it means you're holding your pistols improperly. You'll be MUCH better suited by working on your grip than buying around it. You'll probably notice that accuracy improves as well.

I'll echo some previous suggestions but there are some very good choices that meet your requirements.

P365
M2.0 Compact
S&W Shield
P365XL

If you consider the heavy DA pull of a DA/SA gun as satisfying your desire for a manual safety, you could opt for a PCR, Sig P239, or HK P2000 that have decockers. Those 3 guns are very close to the Goldilocks Glock 19 in size.

I generally like M&Ps although my primary EDC is a P365. I have medium size hands and the 365 feels very good to me, shoots very well, has good capacity, and is small. I love the M2.0 compact but it's bigger. Shields have great track records. The hammer guns like PCR, P239, P2000 are all excellent but I shoot striker guns better.

In no particular order:

Beretta 92 X compact
CZ 75 compact
HK USP compact
M&P 2.0 compact

Any of those should be decent options if you do your part

\deleted because I just re-read the small hands thing.
Oops, ya, just saw that too.

So, I have a couple different suggestions.

Beretta 92 Type M. Single stack, compact model. A little hard to find, and commands a premium, but a fantastic pistol for smaller hands.

SIG P230/P232. Very light, slim single stack .380, DA/SA, stainless version available. Decockers standard. Very reliable.

SIG P239/P225/P6. All the goodness of a P226 in a single stack.

What about a Springfield xds? It has the grip safety, and they have high bore axis.
