Brass catcher ideas?

Turns out that .32acp brass is unavailable online. Unless you want to pay 75 cents a piece.

Given that I’m starting my career as a 32 acp handloader with only 150 pieces, and given how many I lose each go around, I need a better brass catching solution or I’ll be out of business real soon.

Right now, I set up an extra cardboard target stand to my right, so the ejected brass hits the cardboard and doesn’t fly off into the brush to join my lost 762x25 brass. This method gives me about 2/3 recovery rate.

I’m thinking of draping a towel over the catcher target, to lessen the cardboard bounce.

Have you all found a better way to recoup your unusual-caliber brass?

In the process of making one myself, I'll post pics when I'm done, but basically a net laundry hamper attached to 2x4 frame stand. Like a coat rack with hamper attached and turned on its side. I tried a garbage bag first but some of the hot 5.56 brass melted the bag a little.

My method is strange, but I made the most of stuff laying around in the garage. My old push mower had a bagger attachment and I never used the bag. It had a nice framework already built in. I simply lay it on the bench when I shoot from the bench and the empties bounce off the top of the bag and then bounce around inside of the bag and about 99% stop inside of the bag. The few that bounce out are generally either on the bench or on the floor below the bench. For shooting away from a bench I cant really make any suggestions other than something light that just stops the motion and lets it fall. I’m still trying to figure that out as well.

Good idea.

I like shooting offhand sitting down, so maybe I’ll do more of that, even if no one else does.

Does your range have The Brass Scrounger Guy, or The Filthy Ammo in a Million Ziplocks Guy, or the MilSurp ‘n’ Revolver Hipster Guy, or the Sittin Down Guy?

Cause my range is fixing to have all those in one Guy.

I guess a lot is going to depend on what kind of .32 you have and what angle the ejector is throwing your brass. If I wanted to collect all of the brass from my Savage 1910 I'd put a big salad bowl on top of my head.

For my Mauser HSc and H&K Mod. 4 it's a little harder since they throw it to the right and with quite a bit of loft - and force. The people shooting the lane next to me at the indoor range get pelted.

My wife had a Brescia, Italy-made Galesi .32 that dropped the brass straight down (almost)... and then surrendered.

It was very unreliable. It only fed Fiocchi FMJ and only when it felt like it. That little piece and a few other less-then-ideal purchases went up on GoneBroker during the early Obama Panic in 2009. Sold quite well IIRC.

Those are the only .32's I have any experience with. I have seen some of the AR guys on the range with portable batting-practice cages and sheets to collect their brass. I don't know how well it works but I am glad not to get rained on with hot brass whenever they decide to go Rambo. :cuss:

2x4 frame, beach towel, plastic wash tub on ground under towel.
Of course you have to adjust to each firearm but once dialed in all cases will be in same square yard. And mostly in tub!

Coal ash bin. I lined it with rubber roofing. I set it next to me on the bench.

this is actually a pretty good device and at $150, by the time you build anything and the time it takes to set up and tear down, it is a good deal and this is coming from a guy who likes to build everything myself

Hornady makes one that is for the AR that you might be able to modify. Mine works great on my AR platforms.

Get an old busted fan. Remove the front grill. Remove blades. Remove motor if you can and cover the hole.

Deflects the brass without too much bounce.

You can make something like the one posted with 3/4 CPVC and netting or a sheet. Just leave the bottom on the floor and the brass hits it and falls. There was a thread on this topic about 3 years ago and a bunch of us posted what we made. You may want to search for it.

Shooting some place other than a range where you might have some space, a cloth painter's tarp works well. Let's you move a bit and you can set up several for an "action shooting" scenario.

Get one of those nets for baseball practice in your backyard. Drape a tarp or drop cloth over it. All brass will be at the base of it.

A couple poles and a tarp work too.

I bought one of those a few years ago. I found it to be better than nothing. If I concentrate on my shot I will usually miss the entire net. When it hits the net it way too often bounces off the net and in front of me to the deck.

I modified it many times but I am still looking for the magic solution.

I made this one decades ago when I shot at a indoor range. I have a top that goes on it so they don't go over. I still use it today when I shoot on my own property. Just makes it easier to collet the brass. I put a plastic bag inside, so all I need to do is lift the bag out and I'm done. It's 100% effective if your brass ejects to the side. Those that go over your head you will have to go looking.

I bought a Caldwell unit (see link below) and a cheap Amazon tripod after trying a few DIY models. This one works well and was money well spent.

I use a bait net stuck in a 4x6 block with a 1 inch hole drilled.
Placed on the bench next my 45 acp port
