Gunbroker item #892318387. Seven days to go, and minimum bid is $16,400 for worn 1912 Colt 1911. My S P Fjestad Blue Book lists one at 98% is worth a maximum $10,000. No comprende!

when I see stuff like that I often have to think it's one of two. Either the owner really does not want to sell it, or he will sell it if someone offers up so much cash he has to let it go. Now why this "bothers people"? That I do not get. Don't want it? Don't bid, simple. Back when I was doing shows I sold a few guns I hated to see go. Only sold them because someone there "just had to have it" and paid me so much I could not say no.

While I have seen a number of truly insane auctions as of late..

I am not sure if a CA C&R gun qualifies..The world of Guns outside of ban states is completely different that those behind lines and this one started at a penny..
Much like a pair of genuine Levis in Moscow, circa 1982..........;)

Well if one party buys a 1912 manufacture 1911 for $5,500 that reduces the pool of available examples and forces the rest of us to pay more for the fewer extant examples available.

This will keep going til the last Model 1911 made in 1912 goes to Dr Evil for One Million Dollars gloating with his pinkie finger at the corner of his mouth as Mini Me dances a jig.

Whew, at least theres no shortage of sharks with laser helmets. Oh, great, now I said that, there will be a run on sharks and laser helmets.........

Again I say, point taken, I really appreciate all your responses. Could be something is wrong with me.
Hey it is what it is. With this latest panic many see prices "asked" for things like Primers, ammo, and some guns and are shocked. Many are of course angry if they can't get any of these and see ad's asking many times what the items recently sold for. It's just the market and the way it rolls.
When you get into guns (or anything) that is "collectable", all reason often flies right out the window. Back when I was doing a lot of shows I at times sold something for so much profit I found myself feeling guilty. I had to keep telling myself no one twisted the buyers arm. He saw it, wanted it bad enough to get it.
Hell some of the stuff I sold decades ago for a price I felt guilty about would today sell for a hell of a lot more if I had kept it :D:D:D

26 bids on what is presented as an intact, 3 digit (not a more common 5 digit) 1911? I'd assume these bidders already have a higher numbered example.

The current high bid tells you exactly where the market is for that.... for at least two prospective buyers if the bidding is authentic.

The early brown leather is quite a coup too. The one two-tone magazine is not presenting as I am used to but then, I don't know everything either.

I won't even tell you what I sold a first-month commercial for. Insanely high before the current madness. And that was not even a formal auction.

Todd.

I have a Navy Colt 1911 with a 4-digit serial number that puts it from a batch in October 1912. My great-uncle was a torpedoman chief in the Navy, including submarine tours in the Pacific. He “brought it home” with him when he retired in the 50’s. I put new springs in it and shoot it occasionally, but the hammer bite from that original design can get you!

While I don’t think it’s worth $16,000 — it’s priceless to me!

I mean, I recently sold a postwar p38 for around $1000... before last year it was a $500 gun on a great day. There’s definitely a lot of folks with more money than sense bidding on guns these days. If their local shops don’t have it they pull out the credit card and get instant gratification on gunbroker. Or try, anyway. (I’ve gotten more snarky emails in the last three months for not taking cards than I have in the last three years.)

Have you happened to notice lately what bricks of large and small pistol primers are selling for on Gunbroker? It's the law of supply and demand!

Being new to this forum, I cannot say enough how appreciative I am as it pertains the the knowledge base here. For me to ever say I "know" a lot about guns and ammo, would be very presumptuous of me. However, I look forward to communicating with some of you on a variety of relevant topics in the future. Thanks Skidsteer1.

It has something with the auction mentality, all you need is two or more guys that want the same, Alpha male takes over.
Last week I saw what was described as a FBI gun case for a Rem 870 (no gun), Two guys were beating each other up, final price $4,000.00!
