Savage axis accuracy

I really miss my axis II, it would shoot bug holes with several types of factory ammunition as well as my handloads. Did a trigger mod and polish on sear. Trigger broke crisp at 2.25 lb, not quite as good as the Timney on my rem 700 but close enough.

The rifle is still in the family so I get to shoot it occasionally, it's new permanent home is my SIL's gun safe.
Finally someone who isn't scared of a little work to save money.
I too modded the original Axis and Axis accutriggers with minimal work.
I sold the 308 and kept the 22-250.

High were usable but rubbed against the scope which I wasn't a fan of, I've heard the Glades Armory aftermarket bolt solves the problem. Really, the 90 degree bolt throw is probably my least favorite aspect of the rifle, but I can live with it.
The other thing that I've seen/heard of people doing is grinding a relief into the bolt handle to clear the ocular bell. I dont have an Axis on hand to try that with and in fact the one I was working on for a buddy I got frustrated with the stupid bolt handle and bought him a Glades. I dont know If it made a difference because he moved onto higher-end guns before ever re-outfitting the gun, and as far as I know that axis (which served perfectly well) has been retired to the back of the safe.

I used a large half round bastard file. It allowed my to use low mounts and a 40 mm vortex scope with perfect cheek weld.

While I admittedly dont care for the rifles, ive never seen one shoot or function poorly.
Ill also recommend the Mcarbo kit, and a bit of polishing. While it dosent work miracles, it goes a long way for little cost.

And good shooting guys!
I have an Axis II which I think has a different trigger than the Axis. Is the Mcarbo trigger an upgrade over the Axis II trigger? If so, enough to be worth it?

Ill differ to @Bfh_auto, all the Axis rifles ive seen have been the standard models not the ones with accutrigger.

If you have an Accutrigger, IMO not worth swapping it out. IMO the Accutrigger is noticably better than the standard one even with the M*CARBO kit (even though it helps alot) plus the Accutrigger gives you more adjustability.

Unlike the higher end Savage.
The Axis accutriggers are not adjustable without changing springs.

Savage Axis II trigger, it is the aft spring that is adjusted:

I added a screw to use as a trigger overtravel stop. Screwed it I to the factory spring hole, the hole is threaded, changed the spring and used the overtravel screw to hold the spring in place.
