My Wife wants a 9mm Gold Cup!

I really like my National Match (although it's not a 9mm). However if the right Gold Cup or National Match in 9X19 doesn't turn up a Browning High Power would probably be worth a look. I have always wanted one, especially one of the old ones.

I bought a very nice early hipower and sold it without ever shooting it. Had a terrible trigger.

As said, a barrel swap is always a possibility with a 38 Super model. Besides the barrel, the recoil spring may need changing and the extractor may need tuning. 9x19 magazines will be needed as well as there is a spacer in them to account for the shorter cartridge length.

So far so good with my .38 Super/9mm. convertible Colt Commander. When I switch over to 9mm. with the barrel swap I still use the .38 Super recoil spring without any problems with it. Same thing with the extractor; no extra tuning required. I do use 9mm. magazines with the spacer in them as I believe they work better and I have never had any trouble with them.

I bought a very nice early hipower and sold it without ever shooting it. Had a terrible trigger.

I had a '66 T Series Hi-Power that had the most beautiful blued finish on it along with those perfectly checkered walnut grips. It was great just to sit and look at it because that's about all it was good for! Couldn't even get a decent reading on the trigger pull gauge as it didn't go up that high! The sights were so tiny I could barely see them and the thumb safety practically required a plastic mallet to move it up or down! Accuracy was horrible; something like MOB or Minute of Barn, as in hitting the side of, from inside the barn.

Had to wait quite some time before they made some well needed improvements to the Hi-Power but it was worth the wait! I bought one of the first Mk.IIs that hit the market and I was pleased as all get out when I tried the trigger and it was light and smooth and didn't require me to remove the magazine disconnector to make it that way! And sights I could actually see and a safety that was not only ambidextrous but also easy to put on or take off! I gladly traded off the deep blued steel and the natural beauty of the walnut grips for a Hi-Power that I can actually shoot and I tell you, it can shoot!

The .38 Super with the 9MM barrel. It's a favorite of mine. 124s @ 1050ish is soft shooting and the brass falls at my feet.
With the red dot on it hitting a 16" steel plate at 100 yards is no problem at all on a steady day.

I have a Colt Series 80 Enhanced in .38 Super that I dropped a 9MM barrel in. A real sweet shooter.
That's the way I shoot full-sized 9.

I bought a Colt 9x23 Series 80 *enhanced* outfit with an included .38 Super *conversion kit* then bought a Colt's 9x19 barrel and passel of Colt's and Mecgar magazines.

I've been very fortunate in having none of the oft-repeated tales of woe regarding extractors or magazine peccadilloes.

I've even had nothing but good experiences rolling my own 9x23 brass from .223 brass though I have to get my notes out every time.

Anymore, the .38 Super gets ignored. The Para is for cheap and the 9x23 is for the woods.

Great platform for versatility and as far as I can see, all the foibles have been resolved.

Todd.

I'm sure that most 38 Super to 9mm conversions do not need anything done to the recoil spring or extractor but if operation problems do crop up, they would be the first place to look.

Nice looking Commander.

My 9mm/38 Super is a Springfield Loaded target set up at the Springfield custom shop. Runs both cartridges (light loads) on the same spring and I even use the Super mags for both. Bought a 9mm barrel for the Gold Cup Super above, but it's not fitted yet.

Nice looking Commander.

Thanks! Spotted it at a gun show, along with a Colt Custom with it's brightly polished stainless steel look, that was also in .38 Super. Couldn't decide which one to get so I waited for the next show to come around and then I would make my decision. When I got to the table the Colt Custom had already been sold so that made my decision all the more easier and I went with the Commander. I really like it because to me it's just the perfect size and weight for a .38 Super/9mm. convertible.

My Wife told me she's tired of me getting her CC guns and wants a "big" gun. She want a 9mm Gold Cup! I'd like to know more about them. Thoughts?

Go for it if you can find one. She will enjoy it and might let you use it for a magazine or two.

I just checked on mine in the safe. It's still there after all these years. I purchased it new 13 years ago. I think I've only had it to the range once or twice over that span. Too many other irons in the fire. I didn't have any issues in that short-range session. It was the common range ammo that was available from Walmart at that time when one shopped there. It's on my bucket list to get it back out and stretch its legs a little.

Going from the top of the picture:

Series '70 Gold Cup National Match 9mm. It has the 'traditional' wood grips.

Series '80 Gold Cup National Match 45 Auto. It has wrap-around grips.

Gold Cup Trophy 45 Auto. It also has wrap-around grips along with a different style hammer and stainless steel. It is a Series '80 gun with a firing pin block. The one thing that I don't really like on that gun is the 'duck bill' grip safety. I get the sensation that I cannot get my hand high enough on the gun.

I really cannot tell the difference with them concerning the trigger pull weight. The scale is downstairs at the moment. The purist will say go with a Series '70 gun and the others will like the added safety aspects of a Series '80 gun when it is dropped. Mine were bought with the intention of them being range guns (when they get there) and I don't like dropping guns.

I do like the wood grips vs the wrap-around types. I've never measured the two grip types to see if there is a discernable difference but it would be something to check on if one has small hands or fingers. The Trophy is a shooter when I was using it at the 50' ft. indoor range. The Gold Cup National Match 45 Auto hasn't been fired! They all have National Match barrels, the same sight picture, 2 magazines, a blue box, and paperwork.

Oh, I almost forgot about the locks that came with them. Cannot forget about the locks!!!!

The Gold Cup is a great gun but for carry there may be better choices with different sights and a bit more rounded. I am not a fan of 9mm in 1911 platform but put a all-steel Commander in 45acp in her hand and now she has a big gun in God's caliber.

Thanks guys for the gun love! Mine is fairly recent production, I believe 2019. Love at first sight. The bluing is very good. If you ever get to Knoxville Im a member at the Moose Lodge Range. We can go test drive it.
Howdy!, We are members of ORSA. Might be fun to get together and compare notes of what's happening with the state. Thanks for the offer. Were down in Rockwood and lived in Knoxville while they built our house. Always looking to meet new friends and find anyone who has enough land that they might want to shoot some of my cannons. I'll PM my number. Thanks

She wants a 9MM 1911, and I bet she'll never ask you to shoot it, so no worries there. :)

Chances are that the OP's wife would bring it with her to the range a lot, and let him shoot it if he asked nicely.

So apparently the OP makes his wife very happy, AND gains regular access to a 9mm Gold Cup.

That is win/win to the point of being a no-brainer.

I own several modestly priced 9mm 1911's. They are all very good shooters.

I can only imagine how nice it would be to shoot a Gold Cup.

Exactly the answer I was looking for. Thanks, 'Curator" of this thread! Now how to sneak it in...?

Understand the Gold Cup appeal. I prefer the Commander size, but then a .45 Gold Cup National Match showed up a few weeks ago and notwithstanding that I don't need it, it now lives at my house. Just have wanted one for a long time.

Actually in 9mm I like the Springfield idea of a down-sized 1911 design and for me the 4" EMP is about perfect. Has she handled one?

Couple of pages of responses and so many don't actually directly address the issue.

Chicky comes home, Chicky wants a Colt's Gold Cup 9mm.

Chicky doesn't want someone else's interpretation of a replacement. We all - successfully married anyhow - know how the imposing of our interpretations on Chicky plays out 90% of the time.;)

Chicky heard or saw or read or shot something to lean her in that direction.

I think it's successfully established that a Gold Cup is a fine gun (unrelenting haters not-withstanding) and price is relative to availability and desire.

Now, of course, we've been dancing around the only things that matter once Chicky's staked her want.

National Match of not..... Stainless or not.

Then, the hunt begins.

Todd.

I don't care if it is a hipoint, goldcup, revolver or single action, if my wife asks for it, all I need to know is she wants it, and if she wants me to get it for her or if she wants to get it herself

Mine did something similar recently said she wanted a sig p365, I started looking, found one, and asked her if she wanted me to buy it, she said yes, and I did.

When it got to the store, she wanted it in her name, so, I refunded it for a gift card, handed her the card, and let her buy it.

That is my secret to a happy wife
