I just bought a Smith & Wesson pre-war M&P 38 Special. The serial number is 4692xx. I believe it dates to the mid-1930s. Does anyone have an idea when this one was manufactured?

IF it is indeed a 38Spl Hand Ejector M&P, serial number range 241704-1000000 ran from 1915 to 1942. That serial number would be a 4th change model.
Maybe one of the experts on the S&W Forum can get the date closer

I'm guessing this one is 89 years old. I live in California so I won't be able to get my hands on it for a while. Sorry no pictures yet.

Page 163 in the Standard Catalog of S&W lists two M&P variants:

Dominican Republic Municipal Police with serial numbers 5042XX in 1925.

DeSmet SD Police with serial numbers 5388XX in 1926.

Your gun’s 4692XX serial number puts it earlier than 1925.

To bracket the date, the catalog also lists a variant Conservation Commission NY with serial number 2514XX from 1916.

So your gun was made between 1916 and 1925, as best I can tell. I’m thinking it may be worth a letter.

That old you say. It might be worth a letter to see if it's an antique.
Much thanks.
