Yesterday was a rip snorter in the wind department and I had business in town and didn't make it home until 2 PM. UPS had left my package on the doorstep and I found it about a 100 feet on down the driveway. About six more steps and they could have put it around behind the house out of the wind but that would have taken too much effort I suppose. They barely manage to get them on the edged of the doorstep closest to the road most of the time. It should be easy to tell when I started out on this I was just a little frazzled and just became more so as I continued.

The grips were a little finicky to get to fit up correctly and then the escutuchion screw wouldn't thread into the nut. OK, dig the nut out of the grip and start checking threads. The nut was 8-32 with some type of adhesive in part of it and I had to run a tap thru it to clean it out. No go, screw still won't thread into the nut. I haven't determined what the screw thread is but it's not a USA thread. OK, an 8-38 allen head screw should substitute so I get out my small allen screw supply. Yep, the head will fit perfectly but I don't have one that is long enough. Bad words. That means a trip into town to our hardware store/lumber yard. Their smallest allen screw is a 10-32. More bad word thoughts since I'm in a public place. I grab a couple of 8-32 panhead screws, go home, chuck one in the lathe, file the head down to the correct diameter, cut it to the right length, and finally get the grips in place. I'll deal with the allen head screw when I can get to Lowe's that has a good supply but it's a 50 mile round trip.

It was almost sundown and the wind had settled down when I finished. Too late to go shoot but the gun does feel good unlike with any grip I have had on on it before. The wind is blowing just as hard today as yesterday so I'll shoot it someday. It's March so I don't have any idea when.

Edited to add: I just got tapped to have breakfast with my #1 grandson tomorrow morning and then help him with a AR assembly. It's less than a half mile from his house to Lowe's and I'll grab a few allen head screws. I'll take the pistol too. My range is a short side trip on the way home and depending on the wind conditions I may get to shoot it tomorrow.

Pachmayr grips had the wrong screws supplied?

Man the rush to buy up name brands and then make what used to be quality stuff cheaply in China has sure ruined the names of many fine companies. My latest Pachmayr purchase, presentation grips for my Redhawk, don’t quite meet all the way at the back strap. I’m reading countless reviews where grips aren’t fitting like mine aren’t, now screws aren’t the correct ones...

Sad.

I hope you find what you’re looking for, if not send them back and demand they make it right.

Stay safe.

Which style Pachmayr's did you decide on? I have a set of Presentations on one of my OP's and a set of Grippers on another - both 4" bbls, one's blue and the other's nickel - and they are both really comfortable for shooting even though they're very different grips. These are old Pachmayr's of course, not new production since Lyman took over.

I hate to hear about things like this. Pachmayr used to be much much better.
I have 2 sets of the Gripper grips and they don’t quite fit appearance wise, but they are functional. There are gaps around the grip and the frame.
I bought a set of Presentation grips and couldn’t send them back fast enough. The gun flopped around inside them.

I hope they work for you once you get the hardware issue straightened out.

I truly wonder if Pachmayr’s molds are in need of replacement and for whatever reason they don’t know or don’t care...or perhaps cannot afford to have some new molds made. They are expensive to have fabricated from what I understand.

Regarding an incorrect screw, that’s just silly.

Weren’t the older Pachmayr grips more of a clamshell style rather than two halves? I was surprised to see the ones for the Redhawk were two halves... which is where they’re not fitting together very well along the back strap.

Stay safe.

I was very disappointed recently when I found a pair of Herretts target walnut grips for cheap. I figured they would work well on one of my K-frames.

Unfortunately, the old ugly Pachmayrs that were already on the K-frames I was thinking of fit my hands much better than the Herretts.

The Pachmayrs are the best grips I've found (for my hands) for K-frames.

Yes, both of my vintage revolver Pachmayrs (one's a Presentation, the other is a Gripper), have a clamshell design which closed around the grip frame for a usually tight fitting grip. The revolver's grips opened at the front while semi-auto grips were open at the back, connected in the front by a thin web of rubber.

I got the "gripper" model as Pachmayer describes the "presentation" grip as fitting large hands and my hands are closer to medium sized. I would have preferred the presentaion grips but the grippers are a perfect fit. That fit is for my hand, not the gun. These are clamshell grips and where they come together in the front there is a gap midway and it can't be gotten rid of by tightening the screw. The back of the grip has a pronounced mold seam also. If it is annoying when shooting I will smooth it by using a sanding drum on a dremel. The screw is a quick and cheap fix so I won't bother with getting a replacement from Pachmayer. These grips replace a set of Hogue rubber grips that I don't care for. Normally I prefer Hogue because they fit well and work well. The ones I removed fit good but they were thin and I didn't like the placement of my little finger.

Later today: I made it by the range this afternoon and I am satisfied with the Pachmayer grips as they are. No more hurt to the web between my thumb an finger and finally I have a set of grips that "feel" right on this gun to ME. I shot it very well also, better than I ever have before. Good enough in fact to slightly embarress my son-in-law and #1 grandson with their striker fired semi-autos. I'm just waiting until we can all get to the range together and grandpa shows the whippersnappers just what a great revolver is capable of. No joy on a 8-32 allen head bolt today. Oh well, I'll just paint the panhead screw with a little Rustoleum rust reformer primer which is flat black and no one will ever know it isn't the factory screw.

Hmmm... This thread had me running down to the safe to check out my two K-frames with Pachmayr grips.

I looked at them, and the fit is pretty much identical to the "old-school fit" that Riomouse911 displayed in his photo above.

I got my grips maybe a half-dozen years ago, if not farther back than that.

Do those two K-frames have square or round butts, JFrame? (You know, I think I see where your username could cause confusion. :)) Because if they are square butt, I think I would like to take my chances on Pachmayr's currently quality and try a pair. What are they called?

Rubber is rubber I didn’t like it in high school and I don’t like it today.

The Presentation grips were all that use to be available for square butt K frames many years ago. I used them on my Model10s and also on my Security Sixes. They were more comfortable than the factory wood grips but they were a bit too big for my smaller size hand. When they came out with the Gripper grips it was a much better fit for me, but I still sanded down the finger grooves and the the seam along the back strap for a more ergonomic fit.

The Gripper Professional are a open back version of the Gripper and fit me well on a k-frame. They still need a couple of areas trimmed up but even after that they still smell like stinky rubber as do your hands after a range session. I now look to the G-10 material grips with finer tooling patterns for grips.
