anybody know why these dies from Hornady come with a roll crimp die for 9mm? I did some research for a while, and apparently the original SAMMI spec for 9mm was with a roll crimp? Is that accurate? Didn't think I'd ever run into 9mm dies with a roll crimp? everything I've seen on crimping 9mm says not to do that ...

Lee Factory Crimp is for Professional Reloaders!

just did 300 9mm on my LeeAPP this morning. 500 more to go, probably with a nice strong cup of Black coffee, 5:30am

Strait walls do not get a roll crimp, mostly. Sorry, can’t explain why Hornady comes with that die. I would be curious to know, if you happen to email them and ask...

From what I know (?) the 9mm was originally designed for a taper crimp. A roll crimp might prevent the cartridge from correctly chambering. That's what I got from my copy of the Lyman Handgun reloading manual. When I searched for that number (546515) I got nonsense from Hornady. From whom did you get the info about that die set?

apparently they offer 2 for 9mm for custom grade, I do not know why. I found some on ebay, 546515 - which I'm just happy to have found, but - was not aware that a roll crimp for 9mm was even an option one could find, so - a bit mysterious to me. I found an RCBS taper crip die, so - I'm not worried about it, just found it odd they offer 2 sets, one with a taper crip and one with a roll crimp. all I could find out on the internet doing a search, was the roll crimp die, will act as a taper crimp if you set it carefully, but that seems a bit hokey to me.

546515 - roll crimp
546516 - taper crimp

Best I can tell they use the same crimp insert for 9MM & .38 Spl, the crimp ledge is halfway to a roll crimp. Either way, the ledge is way to steep for a proper taper crimp. Buy a dedicated proper taper crimp die and crimp after seating.

They have a similar crimp sleeve in the .32 seater, it makes a nice "modified" roll crimp as I logged it.

Too steep for a taper crimp, not enough angle for a full roll crimp.

ha ha - me neither. every time I add a new cartrdige it is always an adventure ... part of what I like about it.
I’m added a bunch of new ones in 2019, because I got into AR’s and everything was cheap then. The most interesting one is .458 socom. i just shoved a traditional 405g hard cast into the case....

ROLL CRIMP! big roll

I load for my 9mm snubby Charter Arms Pitbull revolver. I use 38 special bullets sized at 0.357 diameter that have a crimp groove. My standard Lee 9mm die set allows me to roll crimp on the bullet crimp groove. This prevents the bullet from "walking" which can be a problem with snubby revolvers.

You can use a roll crimp on straight walled semi-auto cartridges. Only it can't be a more than a touch. And the problem lies in the fact that cases won't all be the same length. Some will get little crimp, some will get too much crimp. I reloaded hundreds and hundreds of .45ACP using a roll crimp and they chambered and fired just fine. I got tired of separating cases into like sizes within a few thousandths and went to a tapered crimp which really doesn't care about case length.

Rimless cartridges like the 9mm seat on the case mouth and that dimension (.380 for 9mm) must be kept reasonably true. Rimmed cartridges like .38/.357 seat on the rim and can be roll crimped which effectively makes the case mouth unavailable. I personally have not heard that 9mm was ever roll crimped.

My Hornady dies for .380, 9mm, .40 and .45 taper crimp. Those for .38/.357 and .44 roll crimp.

A number of years ago I bought some Hornady .380 auto dies that came with a roll crimp. And no taper crimp die. I was pretty disappointed. IIRC, no such indication was given on the packaging. I havent purchased their dies since.

Why is it being included included in standard sets? Better question yet... why does such a die even exist? I dont get it.

On a side note, I once came across some factory 40sw ammunition that certainly appeared to be heavily roll crimped. I figured it would act funny with the head spacing potentially being compromised, but it shot just fine

Maybe the roll crimp is for revolver shooters.

The 546515 shows it to be for the 9X21.

Kinda interesting - well, at least for me.

Note that the die set numbers are 546515 for both 9mm Luger and 9x21 (1st and 3rd columns) but that changes to 546516 for the 9x21 Taper Crimp Die Set (center column). FL die is 046516 across the board. The expander die is 044517 across the board too.

The taper crimp die can be had separately for each and is 044170 for both. But, you can only get a crimp/seating die in the set which is 044177 in the 9x21 Set.

I'd say you could load both with one die set which makes sense if you think about the small difference (.078) between 19mm (.748) and 21 mm (.826).

Yeah, I'm not sure what they're doing except it might be the one 9X21 die is normally set for the slightly longer case.

You can load 9mm and 9X21 with one set of dies. I do it, and also use the 9mm Luger dies for 356 TSW and 9X23 Winchester - though in the case of the 9X23 I use 38 Super dies to seat and crimp since they're the same length cases (0.900").
