I think if it was up to me I would:

  • Add Sporting Clays.
  • Retain skeet.
  • Introduce 2Gun Rimfire Challenge.
  • Reintroduce 500-600M 3Position High Powdered Rifle
  • Add IPSC with standardized stages (to limit cheaters.)
  • Add 2Gun "Action Air Gun."

I really believe 50m free pistol should not have been dropped.

But quite honestly, few if any shooting events are geared to any but the hard core viewer. Between that and the state of gun control around the world, I'm mildly surprised there are any shooting competitions left in the Olympics at all.

<edit> Winter biathlon is one of my favorite shooting sports, and favorite Olympic events to watch.

Add three gun matches, 12 gauge, 45 caliber pistol, full power 30 caliber rifle.
"Heavy metal" is fun, but it wouldn't fly internationally. It would have to be something like 12, 9mm and 7.62x54. The other problem is that many countries wouldn't even be able to compete due to their country's firearms laws.

We are likely to see shooting entirely dropped from the Olympics soon, as it's not televisual enough and other newer sports demand the TV coverage. It's already dropped from the Commonwealth Games.

Agreed.

I wouldn't change anything in the Olympic shooting sports. It is the place for traditional, precision shooting sports. But, yeah, those precision shooting sports are dying, even in the US. When I look at the turn out for a CMP Service Rifle or NRA High Power match, or NRA Bullseye pistol, and then I look at the significantly larger turnout for USPSA, Steel Challenge, IDPA, 2/3 gun, etc...the writing is on the wall.

+1 on adding biathlon. Miss your target do a penalty lap.
To make it interesting athletes would be shooting blackpowder firearms. They would have to be loaded at the line with components that the athletes carry on their person.
I would watch that.

The championship of the biathlon during the last Winter Olympics in Korea was fitting for an event held near the DMZ. Watching the competitors ski and shoot in near blizzard conditions was awesome- lots of misses...

Biathlon is the only sooting sport, other than archery, that I ever see televised. At 3 am.

She won her first Gold in Atlanta - and it was also the US' first medal of those Olympics and nada for coverage
