300 PRC or 30 Nosler

Powder Valley has 245 Elites in stock, just got my 500 delivered last week. They shoot phenomenally well with H1000, Berger suggests 72-79 grains of the stuff if you can believe that. My rifle couldn't quite go as high as their suggested max but I could run them nearly as fast as the 225 ELD so I figure that's a win.

It's pretty much a 270wsm that's been pushed back .090 neck looks a smidge shorter on the 6.8. I like the 270wsm had a sister rifle to my 7wsm Browning A-bolt ii I prefer 7mm and it shot better over the 270wsm.
It looks like the big win for the 6.8 is the fast twist barrel to stabilize the heavy long bullets.

That's obviously the point of the 6.8 Western, it's what the .270 WSM should have been.

Might even be a little more practical than a .300 Womper-Stomper single shot... But @Nature Boy has never made any beans about that:
Need?

What's that again? I mean, I'm familiar with the term conceptually, but having difficulty applying it to this topic ;)

Not that I'm not interested in seeing the outcome of this particular quest.

Beat me to it.......winchester new offerings just over promise and under deliver.....or well, they spins the story a little hard......

Remington seemed to actively have it out for their cartridges........murdered a few in the crib even.
Now a Hornady backed 6.8 prc...........bet that would grow legs in a real hurry! I can see @Nature Boy launching 180 eols and tweaking seating depth because the group was still 5.5" at 1000........;) (Not that I fault him one bit)

perhaps we can bully him into it for a later project.....

I would be vocally annoyed if he changed gears on this one now!

Question to you good sir as I’ve never dabbled in the custom gun area

Is this a normal amount of time to wait to get a project like this all together or isn’t taking longer because of Covid?

thank you for your time!

6-8 weeks seems to be pretty standard IF the gunsmith has parts and materials in inventory AND, what you're wanting done isn't exotic or complex. Add more lead time if you're waiting on components from vendors. For instance, Manners stocks = 12 months. McMillan stocks = 6-8 months, Krieger Barrels = 4 months

In the case of this project, the gunsmith is ordering a reamer and it's taking a bit longer than expected. I'm also having a custom stock made, which will add some time.

I've known from the start this was going to be a long process. I'll be happy if I see it by the Fall.

I don't understand why they keep reinventing cartridges. What is the advantage of a 300 PRC or 30 Nosler over a 30 RUM or a 30-378? I just don't get it.

1. 30-378, too big, low quality brass

2. 30 Nosler vs 300 RUM, when loaded with long bullets, the shorter Nosler fits through mags and actions where the RUM won't.

3. 300 PRC vs 30 Nosler, the PRC is specced with a longer max COL of 3.700" vs the Nosler's 3.340", a throat suited for the extra long bullets, and a fast twist of 1-8" vs the Nosler's 1-10".

If you wanted to shoot those extra long bullets you could get a longer mag box, custom reamer, fast twist barrel, etc for your 30 Nosler/etc... or you could just buy a 300 PRC which comes that way as standard.
