New Ruger MAX-9

While I never went for the 365 or hellcat, I might eventually go for the Ruger, since I liked my LC9s.

I sure wish they would go with a steel rather than aluminum chassis. I guess it doesn't matter when most only ever run a few hundred rounds through their micro nines.

Yeah, cuz they can't find ammo for them. Sorry, couldn't resist. My Hellcat is well over 2k rounds now, no way would I buy a Ruger product over a Springfield unless it was a .22.

I have had a P-85, a P-90, and a P-97. I have never really been able to warm up to them, but can honestly say that none of those pistols ever jammed or malfunctioned. I was not shooting as much as I shoot now, but they just plain worked.

If the trigger really is in the 5lbs range, then I think Ruger might have found the sweet spot with all of the features that MAX-9 come standard with.

Being a lefty, I wish it had an ambi-safety.

I am pleased that competition in the subcompact game continues to grow. This is better for us all regardless of the manufacturer.

Overall I will give this one a tentative like. Too bad I am currently living is a state that won't let me buy one, so I am left to speculate. On the plus side I only have a couple more years until I am pardoned, which is just about the right amount of time for the bugs to be worked out.

The new Ruger is almost exactly the same size as the original Shield. Same thickness and same height within a few hundredths.
The new hi cap Shield is pretty much a whole new gun because it is now 1.1 inches thick vs .95 on the original

Are not these all, including the Hellcat, a derivation of the concept forwarded by the SA XD-9 Mod 2 Sub-Compact? Three inch barrel, double stack with flush mag and extended mag plus grip extension for more capacity (and better grip)?

I think they were in the market already with the lc9/ec9, but now they're competition for the p365 and hellcat.

It looks like its a little heavier than either, but also trumps them both on the 12 round flush fit (10 for 365 11 for hc).

Wonder who will make the 13, 14, 15+ round flush fit micro compact?

Glock should consider releasing something to compete.

The fact that the Ruger is optics ready and comes with decent night sights out of the box for <$500 puts them way ahead of the competition. As long as there is nothing crazy wrong with this I imagine they will sell many on price alone. The new Shield offers an option for optics ready, but it's $150 more too.

Like I said in an earlier reply I'd like to handle/shoot one. I think they've really stepped up.

Glock has the 43x/48. The grip on these are longer than those listed.

All it would take is for Glock to put to bed the whole "polymer encased steel magazines" and embrace the Shield Arms magazine improvments. Then they could design a 43xc/48c, which would be a shorter grip with a steel bodied stack and a half magazine like the Shield Arms for a 12+1 or greater capacity. The 43x/48 are already very thin.

To me it wouldn't be much interest for me as my G48 is exactly the gun that I've wanted, but for those who have to have a subcompact frame it would be a great option.

I for one am welcoming Ruger and S&W into the fray as it causes everyone to be on the A game on new designs and capacities.

Nothing but good news between this and the new S&W. I got a P365 about a year ago so i'm not in the market, but it's great to see more entries show up in this "new" category at such attractive price points. Even better that it's the US-based companies doing it.

If I hadn't just gotten the P365, I'd be EXTREMELY interested in both of these.

It seems to me like S&W copied a Shield Arms 15 round mag for the Glock 43X (a little). How Glock couldn't come up with a 15 round round mag for the 43X is beyond me. The Shield looks interesting.

The old sr9c is nearly identical in size to the shield 2.0. Maybe ruger wants to fill their void. I doubt their new max9 will be any better than the venerable sr9c.

I have a Shield & an SR9c. The Ruger is quite a bit thicker and 3 or 4 ounces heavier. The SR9c seems big enough that Ruger could have engineered a 12 round magazine to fit it

I used one of those overlay charts to help me choose a Desantis SofTuck for my sr9c. The overlay was a near identical match between the two. I bought a SofTuck for a Shield and my sr9c fits perfectly.

This is a funny comment right here. Typical new gun owner that doesn’t know the history of SA. Just because people apologize after they get busted out doesn’t make it better.

I’m happy a true American company continues to innovate and give its customers what they ask for. All while having great customer service.

If you like the SA that’s fine just don’t tout them as a superior company to Ruger.

I have a shield and the a sr9c and you are right about the thickness. On the the sr9c you can use a sr40c mag if you carefully tweak the feed lips in some. That mag will give you 11 plus one.

There seems to be excess room in many magazines that should have gone to more rounds.

Like the new 17 rd Beretta 92 mags that are the same size as the 15 rd ones

Thanks for the tip; never would have thought of that particular match-up between those two guns! When I bought my SR9c the only holster I found for it was a generic fitting Bianchi Minimalist holster which fit several different guns. Eventually though I did get a nice DeSantis holster for it that fit perfectly and hugged my body for a really great fit.

In the era that the SR9c came out, several gun manufacturers were coming out with compact versions of duty size 9mm. 10 round was the compliance for certain states with magazine limits. Ruger has for some time offered the 17 rd with an adapter sleeve for the compact.

In 2019 I bought a Ruger American compact in 9mm. It came with 10 rd magazines. But there are 12 rd magazines available, which I got on discount when I bought the gun.

So, I'd say yes, Ruger could have engineered a 12 rd for the SR9c, but so could have many others back then. But I don't think the market demand was there for it.

I'll 'bet' that Glock could have come up with a 15R magazine for Glock 43x and 48 if they wanted to. The demand, as they saw it, was for a thinner, single stack Glock 19--->>Glock 48....I shoot and carry my G48 all the time. I had a Glock 26 with a sleeved Glock 19 magazine(same grip length and WIDTH as G19) and like the grip width of the G48 MUCH MORE. I carry a ShieldArms G15R magazine..but when I shoot the G48, I use the 4 10r mags..
