I went looking today, not to buy but just shop. Went to several LGS and then remembered one I had not been to in a while that always had a good inventory of used. Anyway, I got lucky. No box or papers, seems like the trigger surface was polished and unsure if it’s factory or not but it has the plain front partridge type sight not the raised ramp. Was happy.
 
I really like the story too! When you're not looking to buy just get out and explore for the fun of it :) love it. Enjoy in good health!

I'd encourage any new or veteran buyers to avoid the crazy covid /biden scare pricing, "wait for the good pitches! ".

I’m really hoping that I’m wearing a “cup”, when my most desired handgun.....jumps into my lap! :D A, 5” 460 XVR, may leave a mark! :) memtb

My buddy just sent me this, this morning, a 66 no dash that he picked up yesterday for $1200. Other than the grips on yours showing a little wear, I don't see a whole lot of difference. Id say you did real good price wise!

He sold one similar to yours (6" with Magna grips) a couple of weeks ago for $900, and in similar shape as yours.

Then he saw this over the weekend and I guess he's just a sucker for nice 66's. :)

Im always on the lookout for a nice 2.5", but they are like hens teeth around here.

I have a 66 no dash 4” identical to yours except with stainless sights. Same grips. It was my fathers that he bought new. I don’t believe he ever shot it more than once that I can remember, he had his favorites. Came with a 3/4 full box of Super Vels. I have retired that one, why I picked this one up. My fathers will go to my son.

Beautiful revolver and a good price!

I have a 1979 vintage 66-1. The 66-1 was the last model 66 sporting both a pinned barrel and recessed cylinder (P&R).

You will note that your revolver was a “transition” one in that it has the recessed cylinder but not the pinned barrel. S&W was using the last of its inventory of recessed cylinders before going to a non-recessed cylinder for model 66-2.

So, you got a little lucky. I’m a real fan of recessed cylinders. It just illustrates a higher level of workmanship in my view.

Thanks for the input. I am very happy with it, I get to retire my 66 no dash. I was aware of the transition. What has me puzzled are the sights. The front blade is a partridge type with a black rear. I have seen this but never with a smooth combat trigger and a regular, non target hammer. Seems like an odd combination. I am thinking 1980’s Revolver Combat League gun, not Bullseye. The trigger has been smoothed for sure. It’s bright and polished. Action is glass, no more so than my Model 15 but definitely nicer than my other 66. Shot great today, fun is tight and accurate.

That sounds about right, maybe it was a special order type revolver for a competitor. It certainly sounds like it’s been slicked up from good, honest use. :thumbup:

My 6” Model 66-2 is the only S&W I have with the red ramp/white outline sights, .500 grooved target hammer and wide target trigger combo. It took me a bit of time to get used to the feel of the trigger compared to the thinner grooved target and smooth combat versions, but once I did I started to like it a lot. (Aftermarket grips.)

Like your beauty, my non pinned/recessed model 66 shoots very well. :)

not sure I personally call 650 a deal on a 66 or not but in this market... I am officially old though and remember the 200.00 used deals :p now I know how the older guys felt when I was young looking at these :D
 
Most older S&W's these days are bringing good money. $500-600 is usually the lower end, and for guns that really arent in all that great shape.

Around here, what the OP paid for what he got, would be a great deal.
 
These days retired Model 10’s go for 400+ depending on condition. A 66 No Dash like other gentleman have posted with box and papers is easily 1100 plus in the current market. I paid $190 used for my Model 15 in the late 80’s so I know of what you speak. A new Model 66 is 850 with a crappy trigger and lock. So it’s all relative.
