These can be lot of fun on forums. This thread is ment to be lighthearted and not a mud slinging angerstorm if someone doesnt agree with you. Hence the thread name. Curious what your unconventional opinions are.

I'll start.
If someone is looking at getting into long range shooting, in my opinion, they should start with a .22. Bad windage calls can make or break you when shooting long distance. Buy a solid .22 rifle and as high end of a scope as you can afford. Once you can make reliable hits at 300 you will be well on your way to a competent distance shooter. And that nice scope will slide over to your new centerfire rifle when you're ready.

Red dots on pistols are incredible. Maybe not on your CC piece, but on any handgun that's a range toy they cannot be beat.

ARs are boring. I get why they're the most popular rifle in America, but they're snoozefests for me.

All polymer pistols are boring, and feel like toys.

Never ever settle on a rifle or pistol due to cost. The cost of ammo you put through it will greatly exceed the cost of the firearm.

1911s are the best pistols on the market, and are worth every downside. Yes, they're dated, yes they're expensive, but a dialed in 1911 is better than any other pistol.

High end scopes are worth every penny.

Precision based shooting sports are vastly superior to run and gun high speed low drag tomfoolery.

Precision air guns are perfect ways to keep your skills sharp. As are .22s

Subsonic 300blk is a sweet precision round.

My truly unpopular opinions have recently changed. Following the recent lunacy in DC I will in the near future own a bumpstock and will put together a firearm upon which it can be used most effectively. I also have been a recent convert to the “pistol brace” crowd.

but an AR absolutely IS a snooze fest in 223. And keep the tactical legos.

If it's not single stack and single action, it's not a 1911. Despite what it looks like on the exterior.
Most calibers are redundant and completely unnecessary.
The best choice for a SHTF gun is something so common that ammo, parts and ability to repair are everywhere. Niche or uncommon guns need not apply.
CCW the largest gun you possibly can. You'll probably never need it, But if you do, larger guns are easier to manipulate.

When I joined the air force and shot the M16A2 I was not impressed. I didn't care for them, had no interest, heck the cheap ones were $800, when adjusted for inflation was well over $1,200 at that time.
But then certain people wanted to ban them and take the away so I got one.
Same with bump stocks, I still think they are stupid but will buy 1, pistol braces, never had a need but I'll buy one to support SB tactical for all the poo they stirred up.

The NFA is absurd and should be repealed.
BUT
'Pistol braces' should have been NFA from the start.
'Bump stocks' should have been NFA from the start.
A very unpopular opinion.

I will add to this using the ''from the start'' portion. From the start, that is, at the beginnings of the NFA, this tech advancement did not exist. Even at that time advancements WERE being made; they left a catch all ''future'' clause out. Surprise! Tech & innovation marches forward...now they call that (and everything else not liked LoL) a...''loophole''

Online firearms and self-defense information is no substitute for paper books that can't be electronically censored or "disappeared".

Yes this ^^, this is why I make hard copies of important stuff

My philosophy is foreign for many:
"Strive to carry the handgun you would want anywhere, everywhere; forget that good area bullcrap."
Whatever pistol is carried in GreaterAnticipatedThreatville, strive to carry that in GoodAreaville.

Often posted is carrying a pocket 32/380/38 (by choice) in a "good area" but larger elsewhere. (Limited by work clothes is not by choice)
Common replies likely be "at least you're carrying" or "its better than nothing".

I'll be the one to say, "better than nothing" is not a criteria that should be used by choice.
Of the concealable pistols owned, what would be preferred in hand? Strive to carry that.

Long, heavy, DOA triggers are perfect for an EDC defensive handgun.

.380acp is acceptable for an EDC handgun.

The NFA is absurd and should be repealed.

Ditto. I always considered them to be silly range toys.
BUT I have come to appreciate these and similar "innovations" as a poke in the eye to anti-gunners, and it shifts the Overton Window in our favor.

Agree. The NFA is mostly silly, but it makes unregistered SBRs illegal. Got it. Thing is developed that is shockingly similar in appearance to a stock and is used by most to shoulder their weapon. Interesting.

I liken it to building a home in a flood plain. Sure the land is cheap, but you’re not necessarily getting a bargain. Enjoy it while it lasts, but don’t be dismayed when...

Okay, I'll bite:

Pistol versions of rifles, specifically AR and AK, were dumbest idea ever. They might be great length for tankers and car carry but otherwise are just loud and lose a lot of velocity while being the perfect segway for government types to ban things (armor piercing 'pistol' ammo rules anyone?).

Truck guns (magazine or tube fed rifles!) are a good concept and been around since people were packing a shooting iron on their horses. Everyone should have one to be called upon in times of need.

So there. Discuss away.

AR pistols are silly in 5.56. (OTOH, they're a great way to use an E Form 1 to avoid the wait for your SBR stamp if you are running them in something that performs properly out of the shorter barrels).

Your first gun does not have to be a .22lr.

The first gun you train someone on does not have to be a .22lr.

Husbands/fathers should not pick their female family members first pistol. AND certainly don't come here and start asking a bunch of strangers what you should buy for them. The best approach is to facilitate their learning about grip and stance and proper fit of any firearm. Then advising them on where they'll be treated like a customer instead of a child to be told "Little lady, wumens needs a snubby .38/.380 semi/.22lr wumens pistol for their dainty little hands".

.22LR is a horrible chambering for an automatic pistol OR rifle- unless you prefer clearing jams to actually shooting.

Blowback pocket pistols are a bad idea, for the same reason.

Yes, I still have a few that have proven reliable with most ammunition, but the pile of semi-auto guns Ive dumped because of unreliable feeding over the years is pretty massive- and a great many of those were .22lr, .32ACP, and .380.

I don't like "good customer service" which amounts to a willingness to sell a defective product plus a smooth line to make you feel well treated if it gets fixed on warranty.

I am a competitive shooter, in a variety of events over the years, and feel rather sorry for people whose idea of shooting is banging away in solitary vice. If you see me alone on the range, I am either practicing a skill or testing equipment.
