Blown out casing

Update, he is also having to replace the spring for the grip safety and the grip safety. They were both also damaged. He is likely to spend a thousand dollars total 450 on the gun and the rest to get it back together and whole. His friend went back and bought a different 1911 from the same store and it doesn’t function either. I told him his buddy is not to bright for getting himself done in as well. The second one won’t fire at all. Sounds like they are buying gunsmith specials and selling them as while working guns.

45ACP head spaces on its mouth. At the breech end there’s a tiny unsupported section of case that allows the extractor to engage the rebate of the rim.
If for any reason a cartridge is going to blow its there. And it’s directly over the magazine well.
Too long a case is one of those reasons.
When running a new batch of 45’s I drop a sized case in the barrel and use a straight edge across the breech face. The case should sit flush.

It sounds to me like this pawn shop guy should be put out of the gun sales business. I am not big on suing people but maybe your son and his friend should take this pawn shop to Small Claims Court.

I had a guy at a gun show years ago tell me “You can’t rack the slide.” on a used Springfield 1911 years ago. He tried to tell me it was against Gun Show policy. I knew better. I walked.
It turns out he was an unscrupulous scumbag selling damaged guns. All the other gun show dealers knew it. Word got around over time and he quit appearing at gun shows. But who knows how many people he shafted before his bad reputation put him out of business.

Being this pistol was purchased in a shop in the state I live in, I'd sure like to know the name and location of the shop so I can never buy from there, and let all my friends know too.

As the guys have stated, railroad tunnels through the Rockies have smoother walls than that mess.

It’s too bad these “sellers” pull this stuff and rip off people who may not know better. IMHO it is high time to out these clowns so others may be warned they are taking advantage of folks. :fire:

I hope both of them are able to get their guns in working order without breaking the bank and aren’t soured on the firearms lifestyle as a result of the douchebag behind the counter.

Stay safe.

I had it happen in one of my 1911's . Very frighting experience. It blew the mag out of the gun as well as the mag spring and bottom plate. It was a reload. I still have a piece of brass in my eye. The eye doc said where it is. It would be risky removing it. It does not bother me. Sight is fine.
