UMC 115gr jhp 9mm use for ccw

mljdeckard,

We will have to agree to disagree. While I agree on the importance of shot placement, police experience with the "widow maker" .38 Special 158 grain lead round nose and the much better record of hollow point ammo prove that a hollow point round is a great investment. The U.S. military had similar experience prior to the introduction of the .38 Special when they used the .38 Long Colt in the Philippines.

I shoot fmj as range ammo all the time, but I would only use it for self defense if I had nothing else, it really is that less effective and has the negative of being much more likely to over-penetrate.

Multiple hits will increase the likelihood of a threat bleeding out and dying, but not necessarily stopping the threat at that immediate moment. The emergency rooms of hospitals often receive victims of multiple gunshots who have not expired when they are brought in.

There is a poster here named 5pins and IIRC he tested those bullets and got about as much expansion out of them as the dollar+ per round ammo. It looked like it did all you could ask from a hollow point round. I would use them and I do reload them but at a higher speed than the factory loads.

MedWheeler,

That is a good question? I don't know, but there have been enough horror stories over the years, that I will not consider multiple hits with a poor performing round a substitute for proper placement of a premium round. My point was that multiple hits do not guarantee an ending of the threatening behavior. The more effective each individual round is, the more likely a threat will cease to be a threat at the earliest moment.

When I went from 45ACP to 9x19 I did a lot of research on ammo ballistics. I realize that most folks here know that ballistic performance of any cartridge, regardless of caliber, is dependent upon bullet weight and velocity. They are the factors that result in muzzle force, which has much to do with JHP expansion. I am familiar with Remington 115 JHP shot out of a PPS M2’s 3 inch barrel. I found expansion to be unreliable. My buddyI had shot it out of a SD-9VE with a 4” barrel, which gave good expansion. Of course the extra barrel length made a meaningful difference as one would expect.

I cite that experience to focus on one fact: you cannot judge ammo performance with generalized question. Accordingly, my answer for the OP’s question is: it depends.

In my .38 Special revolvers Remington Green & White box JHP ammo is very accurate. I do recall trying their 9mm JHP 115 grain load in my Glock 45 and the accuracy being so-so at 10 and 15 yards. Since I have moved to California I have not seen one box of Remington Green & White box ammo. Why that is, I do not know. But, would I use it if I had it? Yes

I prefer to go heavy-for-caliber ammo so that's 147gr in the 9mm and 180gr in the .40 S&W. That said, with modern ammo the gap between the very best and the middle-of-the-road is probably not wide. If it's all I could get I'd carry it without worry. About the only thing I wouldn't carry is 115gr FMJ of the round nose variety. Well, I mean I would if there was literally no other option as it's better than being unarmed but sub-optimal for sure.

I just ordered some of the same Bullets in 124 grain. I was surprised at 115 grains penetration. I’m also new to this group. Thanks for having me.

Yes, I’d be fine carrying it if that’s what I had on hand.

The only thing I’d say is make sure it runs properly in your pistol. That’s a broad statement and not specific to UMC ammo.

For reference, I had a Gen 3 Glock 17. Reliable as gravity. But for whatever reason, it would spit brass forward, left, right, up, backwards, in your face, on your head, near your target..... and it did it with (if memory is correct) UMC ammo. Possible that it was WWB but pretty sure it was UMC. It’s been a while. And it only did it with that certain type. Weird, I know.

It did NOT jam, but man the ejection was weird and I cannot recall it doing that with any other ammo.

Bottom line, always verify especially defensive ammunition

I’ve found what’s said about Glocks running anything not so true. My G30sf is choking on SWC. I only later read in this group they had a problem with them. I have it in a box waiting on a new extractor and trigger housing. You know the ejector I guess it’s better described. The horn I call it looked bent so I attempted to straighten it up like a G26. It broke so I’m pretty sure it wasn’t bent. Glock parts are scarce. I’m still learning. And always will. Lovin the group. Stay safe

After the issue of these not going into battery on the G30sf I re seated them to I think 1.100 that put the lower lip of the bullet a little below flush with the case. I’ve only been hand loading a few mounts.
Be Safe
Guy

I would trust the umc 115 gr hp if it were in a duty sized gun. Sub compact with a short barrel I think there’s better options. I stocked up on the umc hp in the bulk 100 packs before the pandemic and glad I did. I’d trust it with no problem, it’ll put a hole that previously wasn’t there. It’s performed well in all the test I’ve ran
