Remington 870 Wingmaster 3 in magnum

If I was in your shoes, I would. I bought one, pristine, if it had been used I couldn't tell, paid $200, sold for $200. Didn't have any interest in it at the time and didn't know what I had. I've been looking to replace it possibly and anything south of $700 looks to be a good deal. Especially in great condition. Of course you could probably stumble upon one for a bit less if you tried, and got lucky but I wouldn't play around if you have your mind set on one.

I paid $150 new for one in 1974. $200 for a used 1976 replacement in 1984. I wouldn't take $2,000 for it.

Offer him $500 and if he shakes his head no, then give him $650 for the gun and your insult. In other words, grab it.

I had one just a little older than that, bought new in '80, it was stolen in '84. I've have many since, but never as nice.

i have a older light contoure 870 12ga mag in ex condition and like it, smooth as silk.

IMHO, the wingmaster was the best pump Remington ever made. I sold mine years ago for a tidy profit and have always regretted it. It was the straight stock version.

That was a great deal on that gun. I bought one exactly like that new in 1971....I have 3 barrels for it...it's been shot and shot and shot....I would not sell my well used one for that money.

Value on Remington 870s has absolutely skyrocketed to astronomical levels thanks to the pandemic and also the fact Remington ceased production of them. This is doubly so for vintage models made before the 2000s as collectors agree the quality was best in the decades before the present.

That price is BEYOND good if the gun really is in great condition. If you haven’t already bought it, consider that a failure on your part.

The 30" full choke barrel is pretty useless unless other than for trap shooting. The 870 is IMO the best pump gun design out there, but I think the price is too high for that configuration. The fact that it is unfired doesn't add a dime in value to me. The cost of a new barrel threaded for choke tubes would also have to be considered if I were buying.

Those older barrels CAN be threaded for some aftermarket tubes, but the steel isn't thick enough to be modified for Remington factory tubes. And going that route is almost as expensive as just buying a new barrel, or new shotgun.

With todays barrel prices installing tubes is by far the cheapest solution.

I noticed you're in Custer, SD. Sounds like a great pheasant gun to me!

My 12 Ga 870 Wingmaster is set up as my HD gun.
It is smooth as glass and really reliable.



(I have an 870 20 Ga Ducks Unlimited banquet gun, but that’s a safe queen.) That extra-long barrel is a bit much for most use, you may want to get it shortened a bit and have choke tubes installed, then you’ve got a true do-everything shotgun for sure!
