What do you get when you cross a Marlin designed, Remington built action, with a Savage barrel and nut?......
Besides 45min-1hour of work (mostly opening the forend of the stock)?
well....THIS!

This rifle started as a .223....and the barrel installed is STILL a .223....for now. This was the gun I was asking which cartridge to pick for. My ffl buddy decided on .22-250AI, so that's what it will be.

pulled the barrel and installed the Savage 12 heavy take off I got from a fellow forumite a month or so ago.

Savage tools work fine....and somehow i managed to forget to take a picture of the separated action.

installed the savage barrel and opened the barrel channel for it.

gutted the mag, and replaced the .223 parts with a .308 follower I've had laying around from an ADL for a while.

Removed the bolt head from the long action standard face bolt (thanks again @troy fairweather for helping with shipping), and installed it on the short action bolt.

anyone want to convert a long action 783 to .223? I have a trashed barrel and a brand new bolt with your name on it!

You mean @troy fairweather doesn't wanna ream that barrel out to .22Nosler!? Or maybe just take the bolt and stuff it in a 24 nosler!? (Is what I does)....... Awesome project sir! Looking forward to the following chapters!!!!

I took an Oberndorf ‘98 action, a Remington 700 .243 heavy barrel, and a reject H&R Deluxe stock from Fajen’s and turned it into a 6 mm AI!
Took longer than an hour and a half.

The .22 Nosler was actually what I wanted ro do with the build, but i was hard to find dies and the rifles owner didnt want to mess with an effectively dead cartridge.....panzy.
Personally I think it would be a really neat idea, and rhe longer magazine would give you more room for the long pointies.

Same deal with the .24Nos, a .243 would be easier, but youd get an extra round or two in the mag, longer coal, and it would be nifty.....er......

The 783 barrel tho has a nasty rust spot abiut 1/2 way down. Id bet it still shoots ok, but i wouldnt want thst barrel for anything besides a rebore.

What are the thread dimensions on that barrel?
Same as the small shank savages.... I THINK they are nominally 1.055x20tpi...i looked it up, couldnt remember well enough.....
There IS difference in bolt face depths from what ive read, which is why im just treating it like i would a shouldered barrel and setting bolt head clearance and reaming the barrel in on the action.....then the headspace gauge does the thinking for me......tho i guess it would work the same if i just used the bolt head and feeler gauges out of the action.....

Now that sounds like a really interesting project!

I think the .22nos would be great for converting guns with 223 size bolt faces to get just a little more oomph of them without going to a larger bowl face.

Outside of that though I think they're other options are easier, "better" and more punchy.

A Maremage seems a fitting name!

Had no clue there was such a thing as a marlin designed Remington action. Learn something new every day.

Yes it was, You may be aware that the barrel shank and threads of a Mauser and 700 Remington aren’t even close to being the same. No, I did not just shorten it up and re-thread the barrel.

That's awesome, man. Nice pics too! I love when threads like these have pics to boot. Now I'm wondering what you did to the 1911...

I was wondering how that worked, as while rhe mausers shanks short, most factory remington barrels taper pretty quick didnt think there was enough shank to get enough threads and a shoulder.
How did you work that one out?

One last attempt, trying to convince him to let me do a pink to black fade.
