Howdy.. I recently acquired a little IMR 3031 but I only load for my 12 gauge shotgun.
Can this powder be used for that?
I have some Federal plastic hulls, 209 prm, 12S0 wad . Interested in loading a 1 oz shot load or below. Is this powder , and if so, any data info would be welcome.

Yes. I know. I want to know if there is data (as there is with Alliant Bullseye, also a very fast powder and not really made for a shotgun) ... or at least information about what could happen by using this powder. I will dig deeper. Meanwhile, I will leave it in the can for now.

3031 is not a shotgun powder. There will be no recipes for shotgun loads with 3031.

Try to trade for some pistol/shotgun powder that you can use.

There is no data for 3031 because , as has been pointed out, it is not a shotgun powder. Do not go stuffing it in a shotgun case. It is way too slow for shotguns. When you start putting powders with the wrong burn rate in cases unpredictable things can happen. My guess is velocity would be low and erratic. Could be completely wrong. You may end with overpressure . This is bad enough in rifle and pistol cartridges. In a shot gun the case and firearm itself have a lot less strength. However , it is your gun and body parts to do whatever you like with them.

3031 is a rifle powder (I have used it with 30-30 Win, .303 Brit, 6.5 Ital). Slow burning to build up pressure in a bottle neck case to push solid bullets down a barrel at over 2,000 ft per sec velocity.

Shotgun powders are faster burning to push a charge of shot down a barrel roughly the same diameter as the shell chamber at lower pressure and lower velocity than a comparable rifle cartridge.

There is no published data on using 3031 one because it is simply not suitable for shotgun loads.

A full load of shotgun powder in a rifle cartridge can be disasterous: the fast burning powder can produce more pressure than can be relieved by the bullet moving down the barrel.

I have an aquaintence who is now minus 2 fingers because he did stupid stuff like that. Please don't go there for your own safety. Go buy a can of green dot powder, load and be happy and safe.

Find someone to trade your 3031 for shotgun powder - find your recipe first so you know what powders to look for.

There are loads for Bullseye, rare though they may be. I shot a buttload of it in the early eighties using data from the then owner DuPont. 3031 is much slower than Bullseye, Bullseye is about a little faster than Red Dot. 3031 is not a shotgun powder. Most shotgun powders are way faster than rifle powders in burn rate. Give it up. It isn't there.
