How far do you travel to the shooting range?

My dad's place is about 12 miles away over in Idaho. It's really rundown though, and he refuses to let me do any improvements. He's at the point that I'm not sure what is worse; dementia or his natural grumpiness.

Here's a video I shot out there yesterday...

OP:
It’s hard to imagine any club run by such Bratwurst-Kopf people. I think you know what these words mean—-;)

You must not be in a free state.

Our private club is by far the best within a 200 mile radius. Many types of ranges, even some AP, skeet, Cowboy Town us a “select-fire” area when qualified.

12 minute drive.

There is an indoor range just 15 minutes away, but Covid shut it down in 2020. It hasn't reopened yet. Soon, I hope.

The nearest open range is 40 miles away. I'm headed there today.

About a 20-25 minute ride on road with no traffic to my indoor range, and about a 10 ride to the state outdoor range in good weather.

26 miles to my Am. Legion range just outside the metro Twin Cities. Over the years I’ve learned when to go on weekdays to avoid crowding. Half the time I have it to myself.

I am amazed how many club members never shoot except the week before hunting season. But they sure help keep the cost down - about $150/year.

I shoot at home during the winter , and at 3 membership only ranges when the weather is good . I have 0ne 3 miles from home and the other two are 17 and 19 miles from my place . The one closest only has 30 members or so , great place for privacy . I built a nice bench and left it there so it's like shooting at home. The other two are nice , the most people I see in a day is 20 max and that is during our benchrest shoots . I pay 35 a year at one, the other two are 15 dollars a year . All three are self governing at the firing line . Plenty of diversity when it comes to firearms and personalities . I like shooting as early as possible in the morning , so my favorite is the one you can shoot as soon as you can see . I set up in the dark and do my testing in the best conditions as the sun is not even over the berm yet and no wind .

One hour away at my mother in laws. It has been quite a treat the last three years but some day she plans on selling
We had one terrible ice storm here in the Willamette valley in Oregon this year and trashed the place pretty bad. It has taken a month or so to get it cleaned up close to what it was but still a lot of work to be done. Sore back back from all the chain saw work. 673894C8-92E1-4660-87B0-B67F02097E6D.jpeg 9603DD68-A287-4AC1-8B37-810D91E3299D.jpeg 3DC26833-1210-4B65-9169-523638D7E68C.jpeg 71ADD588-FC43-4D9D-BD06-1851FD68C768.jpeg DDAFE1D8-1A98-42F0-A58B-307B81EE1DD6.jpeg 83BB08D0-CE1E-4CCB-A43E-A9EDD6B1E66A.jpeg 574C714E-4665-4100-BF89-84C265D3952F.jpeg

There are 4 LGSs/indoor ranges about 35 minutes from where I live. One allows pistol caliber only long guns, one allows rifles up to 308, two have 40-45 yard rifle ranges. And one has 24 hour access for members.

I split my time between FL and NY. In FL, I have a superb shotgun sports range 15 minutes away from my condo. I shoot pistol at an indoor range 20 minutes away. Rifle is a whole different story, 90 miles to a 200 yard national forest range.

In NY, I can shoot pistol/rifle/pistol at a club 5 minutes from my home.

I have a state run range where max is 100 yards with similar rules to what you describe. The good part is that it is less than 5 minutes away, and there is no time limit on the range. Pay your $15 and you can stay all day if you like. They also have shotgun sports.

I have an indoor range/store that is actually closer than 5 minutes. They have looser rules, you can run full mags, rapid fire, draw/fire. They have 25/50/and 100 yards indoors. All their equipment is top notch. Time is limited, and its pricey. I pay a monthly membership to shoot mostly pistol indoors. Free guests or spouses, etc makes the cost easier to swallow.

I always say someday I'll have a range out the back door. Not sure when that someday will come, or if it will come. My hunting property we can shoot anywhere, but it is 3 hours from home. All in all I consider myself pretty fortunate. About the only thing I cannot do really close to home is shoot beyond 200 yards.

30 mile round trip to the Florida County Range or 28 mile round trip to the Rhode Island private gun club. Of course its 1500 miles one way for the initial run. ;)

Closest indoor range to me = 15 minute drive

Closest outdoor range to me = 25 minute drive. But it's been over taken by urban sprawl so the rifle and handgun elevation "limiters" make it more like an indoor range.

I had to check to see how far it is, but the private club I belong to is exactly 10 miles drive from my home.

And we don't have the ludicrous restrictions that the OP described.

About 20 minutes gets me to my range- 8 50 yard pistol bays, 4 rifle ranges with max distance 1,000 yards, lots of different apparatus and training aids (barricades, buildings, roof mockups, benches, boulders, etc.). All members are vetted, no RSO supervision.

Several indoor ranges within 30 min to an hour drive. My outdoor range is about an hour and a half drive. Living in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio with population density takes awhile to get out in the farm country for a decent range. That plus NE Ohio is pretty flat.

I don't like ranges so I generally head out in the desert outside town, about 15 to 20 minutes from my house. Open BLM land.

I belong to couple private gun clubs one has two ranges different locations one is max 300yds other 1000yds. Other club has max 600yds rifle. I've been member both clubs for almost 30yrs. 300 yd range is about 20min, 1000yds about 30/45 min and 600yd about 1 hr. It's about 3/4yr wait on club with 2 ranges other one is longer.

Hi...
I have memberships in two local gun clubs.
Both are within 20 minutes of my house.
Separate handgun ranges 25yds...rifle ranges are both 200yds.
Only one has a shotgun range and
doesn't allow human silhouette targets, they have one steel plate target at 200yds on the rifle range and a handful of small steel plates on the handgun range and don't allow automatic weapons...the other club doesn't mention automatic weapons in the rules, but has multiple steel plate targets on both the rifle and handgun ranges.

I don't own any automatic weapons so that isn't an issue for me.

Semi-private club range. Members and guests only. 15 minutes from my house (once I get car loaded). On paved roads.
Indoor range up to fifty meters, limited to handgun calibers (.22 lr of course). Outdoor metallic range to three hundred yards, limits on 'large' rifles to prevent shots over the backstop (into the Nat'l Guard property). Shotgun range with skeet and trap equipment, five stand equipment. Rules for safety considerations, mainly. Limits on certain banks of targets to prevent damage (one on metallic range limited to .22 lr, thin targets).

Very nice set up. Indoor flush toilets for all inside. Kind of inconvenient if one has 'old man plumbing', much better than finding a tree.
