What's the reputation on Rock Island 1911's? Good guns?

They use cast frames instead of forged like Colt and other better makes.

I've had one RIA, a .45 bought used (I know why the first guy got rid of it), it was terrible, RIA finally sent me a new one to replace it with, which I promptly sold unfired.
Many modern steel frames are cast, even the so called better makes. Most brands would not honor warranty if 2nd owner but RIA warranty is life time and transferrable, they replaced yours with a new one is outstanding.

I have several Rock Island 1911's and they have all been good to go for me. I have had to contact their customer service with one pistol but they took good care of me and fixed the pistol right away.

And as far as their frames go. I do know that STI used Rock Island frames for at least one STI model. I don't remember which model it was though.

I've heard that argument that cast is just as good, but I'll take forged.

The warranty was outstanding, the gun was not.

You can do things with castings that just aren’t practical with forgings. FN. had to go to cast frames on the BHP so 40S&W would not beat the frames to death. Ruger has been using cast frames on their guns since the company started. Most forged frames start out as castings that are hot forged (pressed at high temps). The trick to castings are process, QC and the proper alloys.

I got rid of my 1911's years back in favor of condensing the number of cartridges I was buying and shooting and decided to do away with the. 45 altogether, glocks went with em too. I still sometimes kick myself for it but I was taking a more practical approach to owning guns for practical use vs collecting guns, honestly I've gone back and fourth on that, sometimes I find myself wanting to downsize to 3 or 4 guns and sometimes I want to add more.

If you couldn't tell, I'm conflicted, lol. Anyway, the long and short of it is I want a 1911 in my life again and I just found an RIA 1911 9mm and I can justify it to myself pretty easily at the moment. How are they, anybody have good luck with the 9mm's in terms of function, accuracy and reliability? I'm a lil more inclined/comfortable to work on my own guns at this point and wouldn't mind taking on a project in terms of upgrades, etc. I just want to know if they are good to go or if they're a temperamental janky headache. I want it, I just want out of the box reliability and don't mind putting a few bucks into it over time to make it a lil better. Yay or nay?

You probably can't go wrong w/ a good priced RIA 1911.

Skipped over'em, because I found a NIB SA 1911-A1 "milspec" on line for $500.
