This coming Mon, Apr. 12, 2021, the law allowing carry of switchblade (auto) knives in Ohio goes into effect, making it legal to carry such a knife there.

OH passed the law some time back, and the governor signed it in Jan. OH had a 90 day period before the law went into effect, and Mon. is the end of the 90 days. This was the result of lobbying by knife rights organizations.

Anyone going to celebrate with a new purchase?

I have lived in Ohio all my life and never owned a switch blade.

House Bill 243 (Ohio Knife Law Preemption) doesn't just address "switch" blades; it also encompasses and makes legal "spring-assisted and gravity knives". The next step for knife owner advocates is to pass legislation that will repeal and prevent local ordinances more restrictive than state law. As hso noted, it's important to acknowledge Knife Rights' six year effort to get SB140 passed. Much credit is also owed to the Republican legislators and the Republican Governor who made this common sense law possible.

Actually, it is the other part of SB 140 that seems to be so much more important than the part about switchblades. It seems, to me, MUCH more important how the law defines such terms as “knife,” and “weapon,” and “deadly weapon.”

I have little fascination with auto-opening knives, but do like to carry well-built, sturdy, serious knives.
