My Daughter claims that my AR 15 gives a pretty loud blast on firing. Using 55 grain bullet with 24.5 grains of H335. And seat to the cannelure. I am half deaf so.......

Any ideas on how to reduce noise, besides more and better ear plugs which she has?

Would less powder (or more powder) help? Thought about a plastic shield but looking for ideas?

A flash can (blast diverter) like this will make a significant difference. It needs to match your muzzle threads, and replaces the flash suppressor.

There's nothing to it, so brand doesn't matter. It just directs the concussion forward instead of out the side. It changes a 10" .223 pistol from obscenely loud to tolerably noisy.

$25 Champion electronic ear muffs at Wal-mart have been great for me and mine. I put extra sets by my back door so anyone who comes out on my back deck while I'm shooting can grab a set.

FYI - make sure the ear muffs have at least 26-27 NRR rating. Anything less is not worth buying.

I 2nd, 3rd, and 4th a good old cheap flash can. It really works good for the shooter... bad for the bad guys! (yes, they are usually guys)

You didn't mention what barrel length your ar has. I find a significant noise difference between my 14.5 and 20 inch ar's.

I've already got tinnitus, and do everything I can to not make it any worse. I use 33nrr foam plugs fully inserted and the highest rated muffs I could find over those.

I don't think reducing your load enough to make a meaning db reduction before you'd start running into function issues.

Putting foam or moleskin on the stock wher your face contacts it can make a big difference.

A can will help more, but .223/5.56 that'll function an AR is generally moving too fast to be super quiet.

Much of this is relative.
I find 8mm mauser out of an 18" carbine to be some uncomfortable (6.5x55 can be noisy in n 18", too).

M4 format is a bit louder than an A2--which is part of that equation. As is the over 3000fps most 223 is running, Mach 3 is louder than Mach 2, in very rounded numbers.

Thanks for the all the positive responses, very helpful. She already uses custom made ear plugs and expensive ear muffs.

As near as I can recall when I was in the military (early 60's) we shot M 14's without ear plugs and eye protection. Probably one of the reasons I have tinnitus.

Professor- Which is louder the smaller barrel or the 20 incher?

Spin on Oil Filter ?

Roll call in the Pen?

The $600($200 tax and $400 can) is an awesome “Don’t Hafta Go Ta Jail” card. If suppression attachments are the path one takes...
Which I do recommend.;)

But, as I alluded to but did not fully explain earlier:oops:, with an AR there is always port pop/ action pop, as the super sonic gas opens the bolt to cycle the action. This happens near to the shooters ear and no amount of suppressor or report diversion will quell it. Even a piston has the port pop, it just has it ten inches in front of the shooter, but it’s not encased in an aluminum receiver.

Muzzle blast is also a large component for some shooters. The blast striking the face can be unsettling for new shooters, never having experienced a spray paint can in a Bonfire before.
Goggles opposed to shooting glasses may help some. The fishing buffs I’ve been forced to wear everywhere may help some too, if they were loose and absorb the sound and impact.

I’m thinking about getting a tax stamp for the oil filter! the idea is cool!

might just do it!!!

Only for those accustomed to the shade, if you dig, man.;)

A stamp, and this, is what one seeks.

But, like all things realistic and necessary, and freaking awesome, there is a vast want for, and short supply of, well made and quality parts and accoutrement.
Which I like, the more “We” have, the less “they” can take away.

Keep these men rich and busy, friends.

You like a Jazz man?

If it has a muzzel brake, toss it.
Could go to a 20 inch barrel if it doesn't already have one.
One of those blast diverter slash flash hiders might help. As long as the ATF doesn't decided they are all silencers next week or next month.
