S and b brass is just as terrible in 357 as it is in 38. I smashed 3 out of 100 primers the last time I tried to prime some. Planning on using a drill bit to very lightly by hand chamfer the primer hole. Is there a more obvious choice or better way. I could use a countersink.

mouth neck deburring tool works fairly well for most of my primer pockets. and I feel your pain with S&B brass...I've crushed a few primers working with my 6.5 Swede and 7.5 Swiss brass from S&B.

They actually make a tool for that, and so far it works better than the other things I have tried, including the countersink. Must have something to do with the angle of the cutting edge.

I bought the Hornady lock and load case prep. a absolutely love it. It's $129, but they make a manual tool for $29 that works just as good, just a little slower.

Mine is a vld style think that makes any difference.

These are a little pricey, but they work great. I had a bunch of 30-30 Winchester brand new cases that had primer pockets so tight I was crushing every other primer.

Chucked this tool up in the drill press at about 500 rpm and it took out a ton of brass form the new cases. Result was a perfect fit for all the primers. Bad QC at Winchester, but this tool will fix it as well as taking out crimps on GI brass.

Sinclair sells a manual holder if you don't have a drill press or a 3/8 inch hand drill.

This might help. There are also tools for removing crimp and reforming at the same time!

Smiles,
Primer pocket uniformers just square up he bottom of the pocket and take it hair deeper if it is not deep enough.

A slight twist of a deburring tool will chamfer the entrance to the primer pocket, don't over do it.

What kind of priming are folks using that are having trouble with seating primers in S&B brass? I've never had trouble with it using hand primers.

Rcbs universal. Works great.

I just threw a large lot of 357 sig brass into the scrap pile where someone got carried away with a cutter. These were range pickup. Primers had blown on 30% and the ones that did not blow looked like top hats. I estimated they removed 20% if the primer pocket.

Use a proper tool. I prefer to swage the pockets since it does not remove material and moves it back to where it came from.

There’s lots of cheap tools that will get the job done, I bought the Lyman case prep xpress and haven’t looked back. I would buy it 100x over. I remove the primer pocket crimp, clean primer pockets, trim brass, chamfer and debur all on that station. I think I paid like 120 for it and I’m sure it’s even more now, so it’s a pricey option but makes it all very easy.

I use a 45dg counter sink because I happen to have one. A 41dg cutter would probably work even better.

S&B brass might have changed lately. Two years ago I had no problems starting 45ACP primers but the pockets were shallow. Lately in 44 Mag and 9mm I can’t get primers started without chamfering but the depth is fine.

One thing is for sure with reloading, it’s always something!:mad::D Still better than a day at work though.

I have one of these as well. It's a nice unit.

Frequently, I use a chamfer tool to remove the crimp from the primer pocket. It works reasonably well.

I do not make any efforts to uniform the primer pockets of brass that did not have crimped primers.

The chamfer does make the primers a bit easer to seat as there is a "funnel" to direct the primer into the pocket. I have not seen any adverse consequences from the chamfer.

I just loaded 100 new Norma 6.5 CM cases and smashed 2 primers before I used my new to me Lyman case prep center with the large pocket reamer.

In the past year, Ive loaded thousands of S&B 9mm using various brands of primers without any problems related to pockets.
The cases I’m using are dated ‘17, ‘18 and ‘19.

I will separate it in the beginning and when I get a batch I run it through the CH4D primer pocket swager. It rounds and opens up the primer pocket. This is a one time deal just like getting rid of a swage ring. I like it as no metal is removed from the primer pocket.

I use the chamfer bit of the FA Platinum Case Prep center. It works well (if you don't get too much in a hurry) and makes a nice 'funnel' for the primer to be guided in.
I bought the RCBS swager die but can't get it to work properly (center pin will not fit through the mouth of the cartridge).
