Which gun myth(s) did you used to believe?

I don't remember that one, but I do remember a few of the guys I worked with back in the '80s that swore up and down that they "knew someone" who had a "cousin" (or whatever) that had their wrist broken by .44 Magnum recoil.

Remind me of the time I shot a pistol gripped shotgun, like a pistol, with 00.. I did think I darn near broke my wrist..:what:

I bought into a lot of Jeff Cooper's ideas. Then I grew up. M-16 a Poodle shooter? You could shoot Poodles but what a mess! I don't think Ol' Jeff ever saw a Man shot with one. Double stack 9 MM 'Crunchenticker's" pretty second rate compared to a 1911. Really out of date thinking.

A self-imposed and fraudulently supported *myth* that I do NOT *collect* guns.:cuss:

Stepping back during one year's inventory and noting several undeniable themes put a hitch in that notion's giddyup.

Myth acknowledged and busted!

Todd.

There will always be time. This one has been the hardest lesson of all. Now some of the people I most wanted to share the experiences with have died. Also, my eyesight isn't what it once was. Kids grow up and have their own lives. If it's important to you then make the time. Maybe you'll only be able to make a little, but better than ten or twenty years later when it's too late.
So very, very true. Thank you for including that.

I can think of two. Both from when I was a little kid - less than ten summers.

1. The "German Luger" was the pinnacle of handgunness. Stronger, more accurate, dives deeper, comes up dryer... I wasn't far into my teenage years - if at that - when I found out different.

2. From the early Ian Flemming James Bond stories I thought a .25 Auto was a suitable defensive weapon. I found the reality while still reading James Bond (still enjoy the books) and was heartbroken. About the same time I realized 7.65mm Browning wasn't much better. Suitable for close up assassinations, but rotten for defense.

On the other hand, I've never believed the nonsense about some handguns 'shoot high' and some 'shoot low', due to grip angle.

Firearms make fantastic New Years noise makers.

Unless your inside city limits, then it feels more like Beirut Lebanon.
Back in 1990, Barrow AK we didnt have telephone nor cable tv service till Jan 3rd.
TV and Phone cables were shot down all over town.

Reading CB Colby's book in grade school set me on a course to a career in Special Forces. In all this time the single ridiculous item that has always stuck with me is the following (below, about the car) along with the *truism* that an M-16 projectile can/will enter at the elbow, travel along the bone and pierce the heart, lungs or other pumpy-bits. Myths that started in the 60s that died a hard death in the early 80s.

Almost 30 years ago in NYC I attended a CMP firearm safety/training class that was my first experience with firearms. The instructor told the same story that a .22 bullet can hit your arm, follow the bone, and enter your chest

#1 - Gun stores are a good place to go for advice on firearms and shooting. This isn't to say I haven't heard good advice in a gun store. On occasion I have heard or been given excellent advice. I've also heard some of the most cockeyed bad advice I've ever come across. Seek advice from several sources!

#2 - That I could shoot well. This one seems to be a failing of people possessing the XY chromosome pair every where. Didn't take long after I joined a club to be exposed to fellas who really could shoot well. I began to improve after that.

#4 - Cartridges should be loaded to near or max charges to be effective. There are some situations where max loads are called for, but by and large more moderate loads are easier to shoot, easier on the gun and the brass, and will usually get the job done.

#1 And cops were good sources of info. Gun guy cops, Yeah. Regular cops not so much.

#2 And that I was 100% safe gun handler. I can always be safer! Ever vigilant and learn from mistakes!

#4 Yeah that lesson took too long!

If you get shot with a .45 acp in the hand it will knock you down. I was about 12 at the time and repeated this bovine excrement to whomever would listen because I heard an old salt tell it to me and I had no reason to disbelieve him.
It's amazing what your brain will accept as true if somebody you trust or respect says it. I've had to learn some things on my own because what I previously believed was "fact" was really opinion.

I heard a lil about Glocks being trash growing up, what I found out was that they weren't trash, just basically a good quality, minimum standard sidearm.
