Finally got some CCI #11 caps for my Deerhunter side lock, and they just sit on the nipple loosely . If I tip the gun they fall off. Is this normal ? I was told I have to pinch the cap to make it hold tight on the nipple. A co worker told me to get a SS nipple from Track the Wolf; he said they have less taper and fit snugly .

Also , since I'm still new to all this, how tight /much torque should the nipple be in the drum ? Just snug or cranked down ?

Thank you

I only barely snug the nipple and keep it rather loose because the drum is softer steel and you don't want to bugger up where it seats which is easy to do.
I recommend to keep it loose if you want the drum and threads to last a lifetime.
The nipple has plenty of threads to not need to worry about it backing out.
I recommend the same for the clean out screw.
Keep the threads of the clean-out screw clean and lubed, and don't let it rust in place or gall.
Both sets of threads get fouled easily.

Another reason to leave them "loose" is for when you need to dribble powder into the drum after you dry ball or have multiple misfires.
There's no need to make it more difficult to remove either of them in the field or at the range in order to coax a few grains of powder into the drum.

One problem with having caps fit too snug is that it becomes very difficult to take an unfired cap back off.
You could end up needing to scrap it off with a knife blade.
If you don't have a knife handy then you'll need a piece of plastic such as a credit card, or you'll be hunting for a twig to help scrap it off the cone.
Sometimes it's easier to just pinch them.
Sure, it's worth trying another nipple to see if it fits better.
But if you end up buying tighter fitting caps then you may end up switching back to the old nipple, so don't lose it.

Single shot, just pinch a little. May not be best in very damp weather if out hunting.
I had a nipple like that and just trimmed the cone down a bit just so the cap would grab. Usually doesn't take much.

Although a single shot rifle the requirement for tight fitting cap isnt necessary as you dont have to worry about chain fires as you would with a revolver. I prefer a properly fit tight fitting cap on my nipple because i live in a very humid environment and i dont want to risk moisture contamination of my load. A tight fitting cap can be removed with a light grip from pliers on a multi-tool which is what i use...but as mentioned before even a piece of plastic from a credit card can be used. As far as nipple i would use a Treso nipple being that they have a really tight combustion path (the name of this part is at the tip of my tongue) and the material its made from does very well of not being burnt out like other nipples. Idaholewis or idahoron...forget which one...hes a user that does a lot of shooting of conicals in muzzleloaders and he swears by them ...other nipples he used would burn out.

Speaking of this very thing i got a ebay coupon today for 20$ off a order. I purchased the 30$ magspark number 11 nipple to 209 primer converter. Ive never had trouble with my nipple or caps failing to ignite but hell the way things are looking its probably not a bad idea to buy one. Especially with 20$ off making the Mag spark 10$ with free shipping
