I decided to shoot my S&W 617 for Steel Challenge for a while last month. I'm hoping that my form will later help me with my automatic as far as concentrating on the front sight through the shot.

I could really see the sights today and had one of my best matches; beating last months time by over 40 seconds. I got a lot of attention from the shooters, seeing an iron sight revolver competing in the Rimfire Pistol Iron category against the autos. ( I didn't come close to winning but I enjoyed the match a lot more).

Another big advantage to shooting the revolver is that when I practice I don't use my DS-10 Speed Loaders, I load individually which takes a lot more time. This keeps me from shooting as much ammo as I do with my Ruger Mark IVs. I also like the fact that I can dry fire using #6 dry wall anchors as snap caps. Live fire is only a few hundred rounds a week but dry fire is over 1000.

Congrats. Glad to hear you're making progress. Yeah, people do look at you a little different when you shoot a revolver in rimfire division and that is understandable as it makes it tough to do really well. Made a small bit of progress at the last match myself. Got a rfpi A class stage in the books on Roundabout with my 3 inch barrelled j-frame model 63 Smith. Talk about odd looks. Shoot a j-frame anything in any match.....

Glad to hear you are advancing slowly but surely. I am not a competitor but I recently started practicing a lot with my 617. I use it as the understudy for what I carry a 686. I am practicing drawing from the hip. Handgun fits in the same holster I carry my 686. I draw, shoot in double action one shot. Draw, shoot one shot and repeat process about 100 times with the 617. After that I'll do the same with 686 but only 21 times. I get muscle fatigue shooting double action but I feel the hand getting stronger. Good luck to you on your competitions.
