It seems like I remember watching a Remington video a few years back (the video was from the 60s I think) and it showed a Remington engineer shooting through a bunch of old tires hung up to silence his shots.

I also seem to remember a picture in here, possibly @jmorris, using a barrel with a slit cut into it on each end to fire through which would probably net similar results.

Does anyone have any devices like this that they made for silencing rifles at the range.

Yeah, yeah, I know there will be a few chuckleheads who have to say to just get a can but not all my guns are threaded and I am not going to thread them. I probably won’t even do this but I like seeing the things people come up with for range work.

I have seen tires and corrugated drain pipe with ends on them. I needed something lighter than tires and cheaper than drain pipe and as you remember used 2, 55 gallon plastic drums with a mounting bracket on the bottom and slots cut in for bore/optic, elevation adjustments and recoil.

Pros: Cheap, light, doesn’t bother Mrs. Morris when I am shooting centerfire rifles in the backyard that I can’t put a suppressor on, can put the chronograph very close to the muzzle without messing up readings.

Cons: More noise and concussion for the shooter than without it, another thing to have to setup, reduces field of view down range, need to put tape over the slots or stuff still wants to live in it but not as bad as tires.

I can’t find my photos of the setup at Clark Custom or any on the internet but they just have a row of cement culvert tubes down the side of the building. Not unlike some under ground shooting ranges have.

Only thing I could find was this video with an also unique barrel test fixture. You can see the round cement tube (he is leaning against it in the image below) and hear the amplified, for the shooter sound.

This is an example of the tires setup. Would not be very good if filled with rain water and or bugs, wasps would make them even less appealing.

These are using plastic drainage pipe, not sealed off on either end but help with noise projection to either side a lot but that stuff is pretty expensive by the foot vs a drum.

If your pockets are deep enough trophy wives now bore you, this looks pretty nice and should be pretty quiet once all the rock goes back in the trench.

The two drums I put together are empty, read about debris blowing all around from other “liners” coming apart in similar setups and decided to avoid them.
