That's where I got my 4" model 57... the gun dealer had it stuck over in the corner of the case, not near the rest of the pistols. Mine was in a presentation box (no tools,) and had incorrect grips on it (speedloader cut Target grips, not numbered to gun.) It looked like a safe queen... there were some handling marks, but I don't know that it had ever been fired. I made him what I thought was a ridiculous offer of $400... he didn't even blink an eye... "Sold!" I guess they were glad to get rid of it.
My 57 has, flat out, the best trigger in the herd, and has that buttery smooth action of a well assembled S&W. Definitely a keeper...
In one of my fits, I threw out the presentation box, which I realize in hindsight that was dumb. I traded the speedloader grips for a set of Magnas, which the pistol looks dynamite with, but I love my middle finger knuckle enough not to shoot them with those. My 58 actually came with a set of correct target grips... so I swapped them... now both of my 41's have what should be period correct grips on them.
Here's the family photo... the Dan Wesson making both of the N-frames look a little small, if that's possible. The 57 wears a set of Grippers, I had just gotten back from an extended shooting weekend in WY, where I was getting 6 for 6 hits with the 57 on the 500yd steel... putting the rear sight at the base of the front blade. It was easy work with a 215grn cast and a good charge of IMR4227. Old Elmer was right... just hold more front sight... and I was giggling like a little school girl.
Here's the photo of the night I brought the 58 home from my FFL, and swapped the grips around...
The 58 is not quite the shooter the 57 is, but it's workable. The action is not nearly as smooth, certainly, and I don't know if I've found it's "It" load yet. Granted, the sights aren't up to the 57's standards, either.
