.41 Mag Association

Super super Niceness!!!! I was giddy with delight when I got my 58, it’s not nearly that clean. I hope you are going to shoot it!
Perish the thought ! ..........NOT :D

As soon as the rain stops and there's a decent day to go to the range. I took the factory stocks off to keep them scratch-free (they are numbered to the gun), and put a set of larger Altamont stocks on it.

Very NICE!!!

A 210 grain bullet at 950 fps duplicates the original POLICE load and is very pleasant to shoot... 8.0 grains of Unique is right there if you reload... It also shoots POA in the 58s I have shot.

Has it stopped raining yet? Range report!;)
The gun is more accurate than I am. My bifocals don't allow a sharp focus on the front sight, but I can still hit body mass at 25 yards easily enough. The target for the .41 is the B27 to the left. I may be pulling the shots a bit left, the trigger was a bit stiff on DA pull, being new. This was the first time to the range with it, a few weeks ago. Rounds are my reloads, 210gr. plated Berry's at about 1275 fps. M58 1st range day 3.jpg M58 1st range day 4.jpg

Nice...what load are you running with the Berry's... For my Smiths just 8.0 grains of Unique which duplicates the original 210 LSWC POLICE load of 950 fps...really accurate and easy to shoot.

A very accurate midrange load in my 4-5/8" BH is the Berry's plated 210 over 7.9 gr. of HP38 with F150 primer seated to crimp over the ogive at 1.510" OAL. Gives about 1100 fps.

bangswitch

I found my Model 58 pretty much in the same condition but at a nearby gun shop. I was down there picking up a nickel plated Model 38 and spotted the Model 58 in it's box over in the used gun display case. The gun was new NIB and the reason it was in with the used guns was because nobody had shown any interest in it so the owners moved it there so as to free up more room in the new gun display case!

New to me Smith 58 coming. Was in my favorite LGS a few days when a couple of the regulars struck up a conversation about 41 mags. One of the guys mentioned he had a 58 that had come from San Antonio. My ears perked up like a jackrabbit. When I asked if he'd be interested in selling I couldn't get a definitive answer but he asked me for my phone number "just in case". I'll be damned, he called me the next morning early and asked if I was still interested. Cutting to the chase, I can pick it up in a couple of days. This gun will look really good next to my SFPD 58..

Bush Pilot....standing at the right place at the right time...that is great...

Bangswitch...smokin' load... A friend used 22.0 of H110 with the Berry's bullet and shot down into a 55 gallon drum of water...the bullets went through the bottom of the drum...

That's where I got my 4" model 57... the gun dealer had it stuck over in the corner of the case, not near the rest of the pistols. Mine was in a presentation box (no tools,) and had incorrect grips on it (speedloader cut Target grips, not numbered to gun.) It looked like a safe queen... there were some handling marks, but I don't know that it had ever been fired. I made him what I thought was a ridiculous offer of $400... he didn't even blink an eye... "Sold!" I guess they were glad to get rid of it.

My 57 has, flat out, the best trigger in the herd, and has that buttery smooth action of a well assembled S&W. Definitely a keeper...

In one of my fits, I threw out the presentation box, which I realize in hindsight that was dumb. I traded the speedloader grips for a set of Magnas, which the pistol looks dynamite with, but I love my middle finger knuckle enough not to shoot them with those. My 58 actually came with a set of correct target grips... so I swapped them... now both of my 41's have what should be period correct grips on them.

Here's the family photo... the Dan Wesson making both of the N-frames look a little small, if that's possible. The 57 wears a set of Grippers, I had just gotten back from an extended shooting weekend in WY, where I was getting 6 for 6 hits with the 57 on the 500yd steel... putting the rear sight at the base of the front blade. It was easy work with a 215grn cast and a good charge of IMR4227. Old Elmer was right... just hold more front sight... and I was giggling like a little school girl.

Here's the photo of the night I brought the 58 home from my FFL, and swapped the grips around...

The 58 is not quite the shooter the 57 is, but it's workable. The action is not nearly as smooth, certainly, and I don't know if I've found it's "It" load yet. Granted, the sights aren't up to the 57's standards, either.

Charlie88, my 58 is every bit of the shooter of any of my other .41s, now that I own one would never think of letting it go! As I've posted before, should of bought one when S&W/Gil Hebard couldn't sell them for $97 retail.

I'm sure if I worked on it I could find something it really likes. I actually have some beautiful Montana 220grn and 240grn FN-GC bullets to test drive, preferably over Unique, and I want to see if I can't find something the 58 likes. I know the cheapo commercial cast 215's aren't every pistol's cup o' tea...

I have yet to find a load my 58s don't like.

Well, I’m back in the 41 crowd.

Years ago, when the world was young I had a S&W M29, then picked up an M58. Both went bye bye in a burglary.

Fast forward quite a few years and a friend sold me an M57. He was a boutique loader, so I had a bunch of cast semi-wadcutters with midrange loads. Went to Alabama for two years and a guy I met just had to have it. I said I had all this ammo and nothing else to use it in. We finally came to an agreement where he took the ammo.

Went back home, and sorting through my stuff I found more of that ammo and some virgin brass, now no gun.

The other day at the LGS I found a nickel plated 58 and a Blackhawk, both in nice shape. So, I bought the Blackhawk. Now I am back in the 41 game.

I’m more of a 44 fan than a 41 fan, what the heck., it fills the performance gap between my 44 and my 357. Now all I need is a 31-30 wildcat to fill the performance gap between my 30-30 and my 32 Special.

The nickel didn't put me off. It's more that I have several short barreled 44s. I liked the 6.5 inch barrel and sights on the Blackhawk. An M57 woiuld have been even better.
The wanted eleven hundred some odd for the 58.

S.B. I attempted to start a conversation re the where abouts of the 58. It shows up in my in box. Look in yours.

P.S. AS of April 20th, I think it was still there.
