Remember SHOTGUN NEWS?

Shotgun news was one of the catalysts to my obsession with WW2 firearms, My buddy and I took turns buying the newest edition and then hunt every page for the best deal on surplus rifles. This led to accounts with Century, Samco, J&G and more. We would get a 5 rifle deal for low cost and then keep two of the best of the five and sell the others to finance our next purchase. Those were the days, good memories. Haven't bought a SGN in a long time, I might just have to go get one to see the changes.

Sadly last ones have been a real disappointment. Without the sarco parts ads i will pass on them. FWIW I have a "collection" of SN copies dating back to early 1980s. Might be offering them on EBAY as collectors items. Gawd i'm old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Next to SNs I really miss the dealers catalogs and sometime daily phone calls from Century Arms. Bought a dozen "3 fer" GEW 98's from them via phone. 10 were super rare Karab 98b's!!!! Tried to order more just after they arrived but someone swooped in and cleaned rest out. All but one are gone now but just one in a series of deals of a lifetime. May add some of the " UFIXEM" deals were astounding with complete milsurps for as little as $5.87. Most with free shipping ( or $2 each). Now you cannot even ship stuff for under $25-$50.. Century "pallet sales" are just too painful to discuss.

I was a subscriber from about 1991 until about 2003 or 4. Wish I would have hung onto more of them . They were a real good source of entertainment and I would go through every page of every issue. Got a few photos of certain Shotgun News ads here on the computer. Not sure of the year on this one but it was when I was still a S.N. subscriber .. IMG_1608.JPG ... Next two are from 1995, when I got one of each of these; a Russian SKS.. IMG_1726.JPG ..and a Kimber sporterized Swedish Mauser; (cut out the ad and framed it.). IMG_1731.JPG .. Those are FFL prices but I still got a good deal on both of them and still have them.

I do miss Shotgun News. I really enjoyed the classified format as well as all the display ads. The surplus guns and parts seemed endless. I also enjoyed the articles they wrote. That was all before the days of Palmetto State Armory and more of the big names today. I remember trying to piece and AR-15 together for less than $500 through one of their vendors and was having a hard time at even that. It was fun though. I do miss those days.

There was also Gun List which we thought was more refined with nicer guns for sale.

But if you really want to get nostalgic, think about the days before GCA1968 when there were pages and pages of gun classifieds in American Rifleman.
I remember those ads as well. The prices were low, but so were wages. Still, complete Lugers for less than a month's wages for a working guy.

I had no idea that Firearms News is a re-branding of the old SN.

Can't help but wonder if keeping the name of SN wouldn't have actually been a better idea. I don't recall anyone not knowing it wasn't specifically *shotguns* in the day and given luke-warm pro second amendment supporters continually crowing about how they are NOT anti-gun because they own a shotgun, well.... just seems they shoulda not changed the name.

Old Sac Armory was one of the first to advertise Milsurps when they first started to arrive. They would lure buyers by the dozens to their J street store with goodies. Think they had the better part of Brazils old armory contents for sale. The bayonets and rifles were stacked high during back lot sales. 71/84 bayonets (from parades) sold at $2 w scabbard. Most like new.

They also had Russian Captured Lugers for under $300. They would bring them out a dozen at a time, all chained together like a necklace. Buyers lined up to buy them quickly and another Luger necklace would appear just as fast. Same place would offer Unadvertised "behind the counter" lot deals to known buyers (like us). Old Ammo crates full of 1900, 1902 Mil and Sporting and 1903 pocket Colt .38 ACPs fresh from Mexican federales. Often grips were silver, inlaid with old pesos. a C note apiece, all you could carry.

Lastly the sights baskets of SKS parts and pieces stick in my mind as does Finn 28-30s lying all over the floor. Used to step over them on my way to the $20 broomhandles.

The Kimber modified M96s Ad gives me a headache.

Once saw what seemed like a ware house full of M96 Swede stocks stacked like firewood. Next to them were 55 gallon drums of cut off bolt handles. All were from sporterized rifles from kimber and others. The lowest i ever saw complete 96s back then was around $48 whole sale with 59.95 at retail. Those same rifles now bring 600+ unsported. Duh.

I always liked the old Shotgun News. I have a 3 ring binder full of “Neal Knox Report” that I clipped from them. I never bought a firearm through those ads, but I did get parts!

The internet killed Shotgun News/Firearm News. The lead time from when an ad was placed until the paper arrived at a newstand or your mailbox was measured in weeks. Now its minutes on a website. First gun I tried to buy and have transferred was out of stock the day I received my copy.

Southern Ohio Gun tried the same print format up until they died, never figuring out how to run their own website.

It's sad, I bought my first copy of SN around 1976 I think.

What is the song? Those were the days my friend we thought they'd never end.
I knew it wouldn't last the minute it began. Prices were way too low and stock came in way too fast. Importers were forced to dump stock to cover costs and needed to make a quick profit. The supply was always limited plus saturation was quick maybe 2000?, Those who could carry the inventory for 15- 20 years are now raking it in. Current regime is doing nothing but driving demand and profit out of sight with stupid laws. Makes one think they are in on it?

Shotgun News was my break-time reading matter until we got a new library director from New York.
She quickly cancelled anything to do with shooting, hunting and fishing.
We got whole new sections on "alternative lifestyles," though... .
Like The Man said: "It's never the one thing."

I recall when it got pulled from Army PXs. Probably about the time they pulled Gerber MKIs&IIs.

Great memories. They had Israeli Mauser '98's in .308 used for $99 and like new for $129. Guns were Nazi originally, markings ground off and re-barreled. Stunning irony. Joe

I loved them, used to whittle away the hours looking at them as a kid. I used to get all my uncles expired issues of Guns, Guns & Ammo, Shotgun News, etc... and I was happy to have them. I still have a few SN around here somewhere, it's been so long since I flipped through one. I miss those days.

Do you remember waiting anxiously for the next edition of Shotgun News arrive?. I recall literally reading every issue from cover to cover in search of deals. Some times 3 issues a month, This was well before the net and some speed and talent was needed when a rare items came up requiring a quick call and get the job done. With the advent of the net the "news" faded fast and only the big sellers of arms and parts did ok. Ultimately they changed the name to "firearm news" with articles and just the big Sarco ads as the anchor. Today Sarco announced that they are pulling their big 15 page ads. Dunno about you but the Sarco ads were about the only reason left to view "the news" at all. Sadly this may be the end of another collecting tradition.

I missed the "good old days" of Shotgun News too.

But I love the Firearms News for the GREAT storys about so many different firearms from all walks of life.

Old surplus guns, newest stuff coning down before it hit the market.

And they still have the Sarco stuff,as well as a few pages of surplus rifles.

Keeps me dreaming and drooling.

Think Sarco plans to pull all paper ads. Check website for details. They also seriously recommend downloading their last paper ads as there may be no more. Might be the end of the LIST as well.. Just think of all the trees we can save ( and sell to China).

Interesting little known fact about the old Shotgun News. If they received a complaint about an advertiser, they would place themselves in the middle to verify the veracity of the complaint.

If they deemed the complaint to be valid after looking into it, they would pull your ad based upon the contractual agreement-to-print.

I had to deal with two or three of these and came out on top after easily proving the complaining customer to be incorrect and in point of fact, lying.

In any case, for those who knew about it, it could be a valuable tool in resolving an issue with an advertising body. Much like Better Business Bureau without the anti-gun animosity and bureaucratic nonsense.
