Talk me into (or out of) a Springfield XDM 10mm

I ain't talking you into or out of anything.

If you want it, buy it!

The really awesome thing about firearms is that they retain their value quite well. If you end up not liking it much for one reason or another, somebody out there will be willing to buy/trade it for close to what you paid for it...close enough that it really doesn't matter as the difference could be looked at as "rent".

While we are on the topic of 10mm & Springfield XDM's...any recommendations on where to find some 10mm brass to feed mine? Thx!

If they're still using the sides of the grips to advertise "Grip Zone", that would definitely be a deal breaker for me. Whoever came up with that idea is a first class moron.
It's an XDm. It never had the Grip Zone in any generations. Also, get over it. It's beyond neurotic to be afraid of Grip Zone and not even know to which handguns it applied.

"To be afraid of Grip Zone..."? Are you serious? Ok, you caught me. I'm literally so scared of Grip Zone that I can't keep straight which model it applies to. I'm probably going to have nightmares now...great! LOL

Most recommend not doing this because potential damage to extractor, which is easy to replace.
Do you know of a source for new extractors for the XDm 10mm? When I looked a couple of years ago there was no source and Springfield refused to sell them to the public.

The reason I ask is I don't like the fact that the extractor claw is what bears against the case instead of the tensioning wall. It doesn't affect functioning at all but, being an old 1911 guy, it offends my sensibilities and I'd like to fit a new extractor in the same way as a .45 1911.

Here are a couple of pics showing what I'm talking about.

First up is a view of the slide for context.

And here is a close up of the same picture showing how the extractor claw contacts the case at "A" causing the case to be pushed away from the breechface at "B". What I want to do is reduce the height of the claw so that the only contact between the case and the extractor is at "C" which is the way a correctly fit 1911 extractor fits on a .45.

I could just perform surgery on the the original extractor but I don't want to take the chance of screwing something up that could result in a poorly functioning pistol. I'd much rather have a sacrificial part to play with.

Just an update, I ordered 1000 rnds yellow brass from www.oncefiredbrass.com on Wednesday. Probably paid more than I should, ($200+21.45 S&H)...but I have some which is more than I had before...it is what it is these days. (I had everything else.) I got notice that they they shipped yesterday & it should be here on Monday.

How about that. Thanks for the link.

I run EGW Heavy Duty extractors in my 1911s and they cost $40 a pop. I guess $50 isn't unreasonable for the only commercially made XDm extractor available to the public. Still, I have concerns. First, I'm not a fan of stainless but that's not a deal breaker. Second, it's advertised as working for both 9mm and .40/10mm. The hook-to-breechface distance for a 9mm should be .060" while the same dimension in a .40/10mm should be .065". I'm not sure I want to gamble $50 to find out what the actual hook-to-breechface distance is machined into this extractor. I'll contact Springer and see what they say about this.

I sent Scott an e-mail asking about his extractor. Here's his reply:
Steve,

The hook to breachface dimension is the same as the factory part.

Thanks,

Very interesting that the extractor hook-to-breechface dimension is the same for both calibers. Unless I get totally bored and have $50 burning a hole in my pocket, I'm not inclined to experiment.

You will never regret getting any Springfield XDM I have them in almost every caliber they make them.
It's very affordable
Accurate
And reliable reliable reliable reliable.
I literally have never had a chance in any XDM I have and I have them in 45 40 cal 9 mm and 10 mm
I don't think you can get more gun for the money.
That said 10 mm is a lot of liability for personal defense against two-legged critters.
But better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6 I guess
Plus you can hunt deer with it.

Can you really reliably shoot 40 cal out of a 10 mm?
Is that really a great idea?
But yes indeed last ammo shortage 40 cal was one of the last ones to run out and this ammo shortage despite its surge in popularity 10 mm wasn't too hard to find

The Springfield 10mm would make an excellent choice in self-defense weapon if the OP chooses to buy it.

Liability is almost totally wrapped up in the legitimacy of the use of deadly force in any given encounter.

Yeah, prosecution will very likely make a play for the weapon/ammunition used...but then, they'll make a play for EVERYTHING because that's their job.

But the meat and potatoes of any shooting is whether or not the use of deadly force was justified in accordance with the jurisdictional laws.

I'm not an attorney and I don't pretend to be one. However, how well your own (real) attorney can defend you in a shooting will be very strongly predicated upon whether or not he/she can show that your use of deadly force was in compliance with jurisdictional laws.
