Another low budget scope thread (things change)

I used the search and it seems the answer changes as mfgrs change their offerings.

Asking for a friend (lol, it's true this time)

What are the options currently offered?

* .223 at 200ish yards max.
* Must be variable such as 3-9x40 (40 is about max. 36 may be better as he wants to keep things trim)
* Must be new
* AO is very much preferred
* He prefers anything but china but realizes sources of supply so it's minor issue
* He prefers uncluttered reticles

Budget as close to $100 as possible. (I may be able to get him to $150 delivered. He wont even consider or discuss anything near $200.)

I told him to maybe look at lower end Bushnell and maybe Simmons but I really dont know.

I also told him to try a BugBuster but thats mostly because I want to try one for the illuminated reticles. I don't even know if they're ok for .223 or just ok for rimfire.

Are the Simmons, Bushnell, BugBuster ok in this price point?

What's the best of the worst right now?

BSA is right at your budget point. They are clear and sharp; never had one fail.

Sig whiskey 3 is supposed to be very nice for that ~100 price point.

The mueller apv is a bargain for the glass quality, though the turrets are mushy and the overall build does not feel as robust as some options.

I've seen bushnell trophy 3-9x40's in the hundred dollar range. They looked ok in the store.

I have the same scope with a 50 MIL ao on my m11 223. Paid 100.00 for it. Shooting 300 meter steel I can see the bullet powder on impact. I do get some edge distortion at 16 -18 x but not bad for its price point.
Yeah optically I was surprised with how good they actually were. I snagged four of them when Walmart was getting rid of them.
sold one to pay for all of them, had one dud, and gave away the other two after using them for a while.
The two I used held up fine for everything I did with them and it cost me well over double their going rate at the time to replace them

I am no expert on scopes, I don't buy into the you need to spend 2 or 3 x as much on a scope as you do a rifle for the casual shooter, for a pro, yeah that may be right, but, I am not a pro.

I am going to go another way here,
Since you are looking for inexpensive, and i should first qualify that inexpensive means different things to different people. For a centerfire scope, I tend to have had good luck with $150-$300 scopes, $150ish for dedicated rimfires, and $300ish for centerfires, I do like to dial for longer distances with my centerfires so this may not be the same for you, as I think anything less than this mark is not going to dial "repeatable" over the long haul, and I have had not so good experiences with ultra cheap scopes. If you are sighting in and using kentucky windage, then repeatable dial is not as big a deal and as long as it has decent glass, does not fall apart or lose zero, then you are pretty good to go

When I was shopping for budget scopes, and believe me, I have done this many times, I often looked at Cabelas site to see what they had in their "Cabelas" branded scopes, as a matter of fact, I have a Covenant 4 sitting in a box I bought because it was on sale and I wanted to try it on my RPR 22 MAG - it was $249 originally on sale for $179. I have also found deals on Amazon by searching for Nikon, or vortex, etc to see what last years model is on sale.

I generally look at Vortex first now for a budget friendly scope, I have a few of these, they are good buys at the price, pretty good quality, and I generally shoot from a covered bench during daylight conditions.

Your "friend" may also want to consider, since you (I mean he) is shooting only from 50 to 200, a fixed power scope in the 7-9 power range, which "can be" better quality, better glass, more reliable at the same price point as a variable.

Last, I used to default to the Nikon ProStaff for my centerfire hunting rifles ~$150, if I needed a decent budget scope to throw on a rifle. For bench rifles to 200 yards, I would look at a Vortex or SWFA today, in the $200 to $300 range (Vortex Diamondback 3-9 or SWFA SS 10-42 tactical).

YMMV and this is way over your stated budget, and way more info than you asked for, or probably wanted from someone you don't know, but, it is my opinion, and, as you know, opinions are worth what you pay for them.

Burris Droptine made in Philippines $119 Very good scope from a great company. https://www.natchezss.com/burris-dr...-plex-reticle-33-13-fov-3-1-3-8-er-matte.html

Simmons Aetec made in Philippines. A real sleeper that gets very little attention but offers a lot for the money. https://www.natchezss.com/simmons-a...1-sfp-fmc-wp-capped-truplex-box-5l-black.html
I thought all the new simmons were china made now. good to know some aren't, I like most Philippines made scopes

That Aetec could be a real good deal , I had no clue they were still making them . I bought some of the original models when they first came out many moons ago . I was impressed with the clarity of the glass for a budget scope ,

The main gripe I've heard with Optics Planet is shipping time and not making buyers aware when products are backordered. I experienced that myself, ordered some B27 targets as a gift and when I ordered them they were supposedly in stock. About a week later, I got a notification they were backordered. I ended up ordering some from somewhere else for a little more money and just waited for the ones from OP to ship and kept them for myself. It was a good deal and I needed some anyway.

The other reason I don't order from them much is they charge Illinois residents sales tax, and not just that but its something like 10-11%. Most areas in IL sales tax is like 7% or so when you add in the local portion of the sales tax. So, any savings usually ends up being offset by that for me even if I get free shipping.

I had the same thing happen.......

Weeks later never received the item that showed as "in stock"

Well now I have to get a call into optics planet. Ordered an 870 barrel that was shown as in stock and canceled it a few hours later when it said estimated shipping time like 10-20 weeks. Better make sure they refunded my money....

Optics Planet strikes again!

I currently have Two 223 rifles, both bolt guns. The Axis came with a KonusPro 275 with a BDC reticle and no parallax adjustment. I have shot it to 200yds but at 3-9 it is at about it's limit. It is very bright and clear and holes it's settings perfectly. On the other rifle a Model 10 Savage I have a Burris Fullfield E1 4.5-14X42 and it too is nice. Got it on ebay beginning Dec 2020 for 217.00 shipped.

Would greatly help if they could actually look thru them to compare.

These are what Id recommend.

Burris FF2 e1 4.5-14x42 190 on amazon....Id spend the extra for this
https://www.amazon.com/Burris-Optic...lfield&qid=1619602116&s=sporting-goods&sr=1-5

Burris ff2 3-9 150
https://www.amazon.com/Burris-Fullf...lfield&qid=1619602060&s=sporting-goods&sr=1-4

the other one id suggest as a top choice Sig Whiskey 3 3-9x40 140
https://www.amazon.com/Sig-Sauer-Whisky-Riflescope-SOW33202/dp/B07R3FDVM6

The Athlons, both the Neos, and the Talos, are actually very good scopes also. They are made in china, but I've had the 3-12 (or what ever they are) in both models as well as a bunch of other Athlons, and not been disappointed.
If he absolutely WANTS a scope at or under 150 with side focus/AO, then these are where id start and stop.

Other options I've used that are cheaper still, and feel and act like it....I have still had good service from all of these as well, tho the banners i bought 4 of and had one fail right out the gate.
bushnell 3.5-10x36 rimfire scope....
bushnell banner 6-18x40AO
UTG bug buster

have you guys looked through the sig? Now I’m torn between that and a 4-12 athlon neos SF for a squirrel gun.

Vortex Sonora 4-12x44, still has a lifetime warranty like the rest of Vortex optics
I bought two Truglo scopes that were 4-12x44 on GunBroker under $100

That sig doesn't have side focus? I need something I can use for 30-50yard shots all the way to 100 for paper punching and shooting pieces of clays.
No, none of the whiskey3's have focusing ability. If thats a requirement, then the Athlon, or the previously mentioned Mueller, are probably a better option.

I think @Varminterror had a Whiskey that failed or he witnessed a failure on when they hit the market, but my memory isn’t always what it used to be.

Trying to hit the OP’s price point is tough, given the preferred features and wanting a suggestion that will last. My money would likely be on the FF2 E1 but I did veer off that road a couple years ago in favor of a Bushnell Prime or 3, which replaced the Trophy line. Unfortunately they’re over $200 now but mine was a very specific application.
