They’re proofed the same as any 1911 auto and are made to shoot the same ammo. Feed it anything you would feed a WW1-era 1911.
Personally, I keep my Smith 1917 loaded with very hot but lower velocity than +P 240gr Sierras and am not at all bothered about shooting them.
