I have a Dillion 550 RL press. I'm using a Lyman MSR die set. The size die is a small base die. I'm using One Shot spray sizing lube. I have New Never fired Starline brass. I had 5 cases rip out of the shell plate, and I'm not able to size them all the way down. I've tried sizing them in steps, backing up when they feel like they're binding, but when I get close to full length sizing, the case sticks in the die, and rips out of the shell plate. (brass rips out at base) I went so far as to use anti seize, and I'm still having the same issue. I also removed the de priming tool JIC it was getting stuck. Still had the same issue. The brass does fit in the Layman go/No go gauge. It almost seems there is an issue with the sizing die. I tried to do some once fired brass and this is even worse, it binds up almost at the start. I tried the once fired brass in the in the go/No go gauge, and hangs up well short, probably a good 3/8 of an inch. These were factory loads. FYI I've loaded over 30,000 rounds of various rifle and handguns, and never ran into an issue like this. What am I missing.

Hie thee to a LGS and get RCBS Case lube to start.
Next thing if that doesn't work, get rid of that SB die.

Your lube (OS) is not good enough or your not apply enough for the large surface case. I use Imperial Sizing wax. Even with it, if it feels harder than I think it should I back it down and add more. I only use OS for 223R or pistol cases. Anything larger gets Imperial Sizing wax.
I agree with MEHarvey, loose the SB dies. not needed if you have a in spec std die. My set is a Redding for my 458 SOCOM.

For cases like the .458 I’d use imperial wax.

Whenever a sizing question starts with "One Shot", start by switching to a competent lube.

One shot works great on the vast majority of what I reload except 45-70 and 50 Beowulf.

I use this wax for everything! and it cleans up easy with rubbing alcohol
I don't think of One-Shot as a lubricant, though it has some of that quality, but more of a cleaner. It's big advantage is you don't have to degrease/clean the cases afterwards.
Old school, I don't think anybody marketed "resizing lubricant" when I started. What we did back in those days was use a very heavy oil, nay a light grease. Soak an ink pad with it, very lightly. Doesn't take much. Then we rolled the cases (usually 5 at a time) on the pad. The trick was a VERY LIGHT coating. Once resized the brass then had to be degreased. I use my vibratory tumbler with ground walnut shell for this.
So yeah, try a real lubricant. Oh and I'm using Hornady dies. Never had a problem but then I've only loaded about 500 rounds .458 in total.

I know it works fine in most cases, none the less it fails to work so much more often than the alternatives that it's always the first thing to change when troubleshooting.
OK. Here is the deal. Lyman requested I send the die back in. The black oxide finish sticks to the cases. I also switched to a Lee sizing die. With the imperial lube, it works great. I'll have to see how the polished Lyman die works once it gets back to me.
Here is the next issue. The Lyman seating die has a cup in the seating die similar to a round nose bullet. The issue is if the Hornady 300 gr. hollow point isn't almost perfect straight up and down, the seating die will shear the very edge of the lead hollow point. You have feel each bullet slide up into the cup or the bullet push in. The minute it feels like a hard stop, you have to back it back out. Try and realign the bullet. Then try it again. This may take 4 to 5 tries. Yes the case has a slight bell to he mouth from the charging station. Anyone else have this issue? Again is this a design issue with the seating die or just an issue reloading 458 Socoms?

Your having all kinda issue with Lyman. Have not had problems with my cheap Lee Set.
Mabey get a Lee set?

Are you using any thing to expand the case beside the expander that came with the sizing die? if not use your deburring tool and camfer the mouth of the case to break the sharp edge.
I've loaded the Hornady 300 gr HP without any problems. I use the normal seating stem that came with my Redding set.
Thanks for the reply. It's funny. After I posted this request for help I took apart my lee 30-30 die set. Brand new it had a really sharp edge. I spun it in a drill and hit it with some 3m cloth. I then did the same for the Lyman. I can see why it was shearing the lead. Bottom line just breaking the sharp edge took care of the issue. I haven't sheared one off since. I still need to be really careful since there isn't a lot of room for error but I'm thinking this will give me better loads as well. Thanks again.
