New update: we hit a new record in guns sales in the first four months of 2021

If all the new gun owners voted a certain way that ensured their new found liberties, then political contests would actually be won by a landslide for a particular party.

The fact is they don’t vote that way. If they did, all the new gun owners from the aftermath of the 2008 election would not have resulted in the results of the 2012 election.

New gun owners are merely the tip of the iceberg of the change that has to take place in their minds not just in their material things. It has always been easy to buy an object that represents an idea. It’s another thing altogether to follow through with the philosophy of that object.

But why continued record gun sales? We live in a free and fair country with justice and laws. It doesn't make sense that so many people feel the need for personal protection.

All just panic? Stupid people with no common sense?

I believe the images of cities burning and cops being bashed in the head with bricks is etched in the minds of millions of people. Buying personal protection was the next logical step after watching the mess of 2020 unfold.

Look at what happened in Louisville this last week (Kentucky Derby weekend). BLM protesters surrounded a group of people eating at a restaurant. Two of the protesters were armed, one with a rifle. One or more of the patrons pulled their weapons in response. The protest leaders worked quickly to defuse the situation before it turned violent.

Plus the continuing violence in every major city.

I am not surprised by the huge uptick in gun sales. The past provided lots of examples of how law enforcement is unlikely to arrive in time to protect you. I have read reports that many of the new gun buyers are parts of groups that feel very threatened by right and left extremists. Black men and women, Asians, Jewish people, domestically abused women, older people, and, of course, the paranoid pseudo warrior types. I just hope they all learn how and when to use a gun.

Look at it this way: all these new gun owners may not be activist pro-gunners, but at least they're no longer anti-gunners. Clearly, the anti-gun voter base is diminishing, and savvy politicians (including Democrats) are paying attention. The anti-gun rhetoric may still be there, but you may notice that nothing concrete is coming out of it. "Actions speak louder than words."

Locally the gun store owners have said that they have seen a huge increase in Blacks buying guns. Those over 40 are buying for self protection. The younger crowd are buying mostly as fashion accessories. A lot of young men, and women, come in wanting a "Glock or a Draco" as that is what is showing up in the rap videos. I have had young women wanting to buy a gun that their extremely long finger nails will never fit thru the trigger guard. For them it is more about impressing their friends.

We are getting a new gun store locally. Media is making a huge noise as it is the first black owned gun store in Indiana. Tony Katz had an interview with Ryan Vaden this morning. Ryan is planning to open two stores this year. And has bought five acres to build a gun range, both indoors and outdoors. In five years he is planning to have a 5000 sq ft manufacturing plant where he plans to employ 100 to 150 making guns. His goal to take locals and train them via Ivy Tech so that it would decrease the local unemployment.

These numbers need careful documentation as to sources, times, and methods of collection.

Places with FOID cards also process through NICS, as do a number of places that process CHL. Which will drive up the number of information requests as a gross number.

NSSF has been doing yeoman's work trying to sort out just what actual firearms sales are. Sadly, few journos research past the first or second Google result, and never find the NSSF numbers. Or they misreport NSSF findings.

I guess that figure answers the title question of another post here, “Will lack of ammo deter gun purchase?”.

It hasn't deterred me. I've purchased two new guns so far this year and am careful how much of my small inventory I shoot up.

If that article is correct Illinois which is not one of the four biggest states bought up over a quarter of all guns with over 4 million sold. Kentucky which is a pretty small state was the only other one in the 7 figures. Something seems kind of off.

Given the gun sales numbers , it is reasonable to expect that the ammunition shortages will not ease any time soon.

Here is an entertaining thing to ponder:
Barack H Obama has probably been usurped as the greatest gun salesman in history.

Let’s hear it for unintended consequences!!!

I disagree. BO Plenty is still the greatest gun salesman in history! He is simply pulling the puppet strings.

As for the crisis I will quote Gomer Pyle, USMC: "Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!"

I did my part last year to contribute to those gun sales with 10 guns, but none this year so far. I have been spending all of my spare money on stereo equipment and music but that will change back to guns later in the year.

I think its great that there are so many new gun owners. However, I wouldn't count on all of them being pro-gun supporters or even no longer anti-gun. There will be plenty of new owners that will take a "Well, I got mine" attitude toward gun legislation. Some folks won't mind the door being closed behind them just so as long as they've got theirs. Which is short-sighted to say the least, and which puts the onus on us to continue reaching out to our representatives and letting them know where we stand

Many people I know well buy guns now because they are afraid they'll be denied that right in the future. Sadly, some of them still vote against 2A legislation and in favor of candidates who work against 2A, but lie about it. These guys think they can have it both ways.

GAF/Sniper66:
You've probably spotted my previous comment about a pre-retirement coworker who grew up near London, UK.; came to the US for the aviation program (major) at a small, regional university.

He is a "kitchen table FFL", and has the tax stamps for his original MP5 and Chinese AKM. He also qualified as a FFDO for his cockpit job (they can bring the issue HK USP .40) . Yet despite that... he told me that he votes Democrat. We never discuss politics.

Knowing that a guy with the types of guns carried by SWAT Teams (and many Brit/Euro Airport Police) votes a "certain way", then anything is possible with more typical or even non-typical US gun owners.

I am absolutely sure that a lot of those new gun owners are not like us in their support, but now they have at least some incentive to support gun rights.

My son-in-law bought a Glock G19 to protect his family after being stationed in the Seattle area after 4 years in Japan. He's Air Force and an ardent Leftist. Voted for Biden, yet wants my help in helping him choose a firearm for protection.

Idiot. There are thousands and thousands more like him out there. They want the power and protection of a firearm, but continue to vote for those that want to take them away. This is the reality in New Amerika. Insanity rules.

Statistically, average police response time targets in cities is five to six minutes, more in rural areas. No matter how you slice it, no matter how twisted/ radical your political views, the calvary is always five plus minutes away - again, no matter your political beliefs, the first five plus minutes of survival belong to you - you and yours are on your own. Most people do not have this awareness, it is never discussed or even thought about. However, in-your-face unrest and vulnerability drive home a fear - a roundabout way of instilling the on-your-own reality even without the statistics.
