whats the story on Clinton hole stocks for AKs?

I've seen them on Mak-90 sporters and on AKs in more gun control restricted states. Was this a measure to make it more 'sporty' and 'less dangerous' to satisfy the politicians?

Also out of curiousity (i'm serious) where could you buy one of these? They're such a joke that I have to have one.
 
The 1994 AWB listed several items that defined a rifle as an "Assault Weapon" I can't recall everything, but a pistol grip, bayonet lug, flash hider, detachable magazine, and semi-auto. There are probably others, but I don't want to look it up at the moment.

A gun could have a certain number of the evil characteristics, but not all. On AR's to be legal all that was needed was to remove the flash hider and bayonet lug. There were more AR's sold 1994-2004 than the previous 10 years. They just had to meet certain criteria.

The AK's were actually effected by an earlier 1986 law that banned the import of Assault rifles. Going with a thumb hole stock met the requirements. The MAK 90 came about in 1990 to be legal. The SKS wasn't effected since it didn't have a detachable magazine. The same definition carried over to the 1994 AWB.

Ive got a clean takeoff Mak90 rear thumbhole stock I could be talked out of, PM me :)

I think mine is for the "straight-cut" receiver, some will only fit the "angle-cut." I believe there is also a difference between stocks for the stamped vs. milled receivers. These were, IIRC, made of Chui wood, and are VERY thick and uncomfortable through the grip area.

The NHM90 and 91 were often seen with a much more ergonomic thumbhole made by Bishop in the US-

I have one of these also and like it so well I left it alone on the gun.

The SKS Type-M did have a (rather nice) thumbhole because they took detachable AK mags.

Was a perfectly legal work around to the fed AWB.
Having a "conspicuous pistol grip" was one of the dread "ebil" features under the AWB. Not having one of those meant you could have one more and not run afoul of the more than two = banned!

They were clunky and awful, and spawned a great trade in 'original' stocks, which then got into the 923 "parts count" miasma.

One can never placate politicos, just the nature of the beast.

until they pull up a news article that says "Parents killed by son wielding Sword rifle! It was a assualt weapon with a bayonet lug still attached, meaning you press on the lug button and a sword comes out of your rifle"
 
As said, it wasn’t intentionally “allowed”, more like a “you didn’t say we couldn’t do it this way”. I wish I would have kept my old thumb hole MAK.

Ha, forgot I used to have one of those too, back in the day.

The stocks on those were some sort of laminate and totally unusable from the factory. I sanded mine down and smoothed it out- turned out pretty nice. I do miss that Maadi. Looked terrible, but shot great.
 
I've got one , she's a Romanian AK with a Hideous plastic thumb hole stock on it . I got it when things were looking bad and I could not afford an AR . I want to find wood stocks for it . Its just so freaking ugly its hard to look at , Ive never even shot the darn thing , had it over 20 years lol

Yeah it eventually cracked after a short period and it lay broken for years before he put some really nice laminate furniture on it. IMG_20210515_120527.jpg
 
There are reports that wooden furniture from an AK—- 74—-fit a MAK 90 fairly well, if the MAK receiver is “straight-cut”.

It would look just like thousands and thousands of similar AKMs in the US......

AK's and SKS's.jpg I 've got one. I will say it's more accurate than my AKS. The longer butt stock means it fit's the average American better than an AK. I've had lot's of offers to sell, but I'm not quite ready yet. It IS a lot of fun to shoot and it's so much less deadly without that bayonet!
 
Of my group of AK's, my MAK-90 does tend to be the most accurate of the bunch, since updated with regular furniture.
 
thumbholes were the result of 922R, not the 1994 AWB.

the loophole, was adding more USA made parts until the gun was no longer considered an import.

I had originally planned to replace the furniture, but at this point I will keep it historically accurate.

Other than trigger slap, it is a great shooting gun.

vkeith: this video and others make changing the trigger group easy. This video is well-illuminated with a good camera. He also puts in the retainer plate.

First buy a "Retainer plate" for the receiver's pins so that it goes in the same day you change the trigger group.. No more diabolical struggles with a demonic shepherd's hook.:evil:

The plate will be the best $10-$15 etc you ever spent.
Very easy to put it in, secures the pins quite well. My ACC Maadi looks just like yours except mine has a normal buttstock. Your furniture has a beautiful stain.
